Viewing by Sheriff’s department of recovered stolen property tomorrow in Covington

Residents of South King County who have recently had items stolen are encouraged to attend

On Thurs. Mar. 26 the King County Sheriff’s Office will be holding a public viewing of stolen property recently recovered from a joint investigation with Covington and Maple Valley detectives. A significant portion of the items recovered are believed to have been taken from recent car prowls and burglaries in the Burien, Highline and South Seattle areas.
On Mar. 13, just after 6 a.m., the KCSO’s Tac 30 SWAT unit moved in on a home in the Timberlane area of Covington and arrested two people on investigation for narcotics sales and stolen property. While searching through the home a “cache” of stolen property was discovered that is believed to be from all over South King County as well as Kent and Maple Valley.
The bust made headlines for the recovery of a Japanese Katana sword that had been stolen from the family of a WWII marine veteran during a burglary in January. A deputy with the Covington police force, a former marine himself, recognized the sword and returned it to the grandson of the late WWII vet.

At Large in Ballard: The New Italians

By Peggy Sturdivant

Their parents didn’t immigrate to America. They are not first, second or third generation Italian-Americans. They work in research laboratories at UW, the Hutch, and Seattle Children’s Research Institute. They work at Microsoft and Boeing, Amazon and start-up companies. They are the new Italians living and working in Seattle, and they want to create an Italian Cultural Center.

When contacted by Dr. Valeria Vasta about the quest for a home for a library and cultural center, I was bemused. Could there possibly be a need? I’d never heard much about an Italian community in Seattle.

But as one who loves the sound of the language and Italian-American food, I was curious. We arranged to meet so that I could learn more. When I found Monday night parking on Ballard Avenue to meet at Caffe Umbria there were not one, but four women, all looking at me as if I could open a locked gate. I was immediately lost to their cause.

The Psychic View – Stay Weird!

By Marjorie Young

The recent Academy Awards featured a number of memorable moments, but for me there was one that particularly resonated; the acceptance speech of Graham Moore, winner of best adapted screenplay for ‘The Imitation Game.’ He began with praise for Alan Turing, the film’s hero, whose genius broke the Nazi Enigma code. Though saving millions of lives, Turing was later persecuted for being gay, eventually taking his own life. Moore confessed that he had attempted suicide at sixteen, believing he would ‘never fit in.’ Yet now, he had reached the pinnacle of his career. Moore reassured other ‘misfits’ they would ultimately find their place in this world, fervently urging them to ‘stay weird.’

There are countless others who feel like aliens amidst their peers or families. Some who are gay face that crucible, but alienation is hardly confined to them alone. Anyone who ‘marches to the beat of a different drummer’ undergoes similar trials, believing they are too freakish or odd to ever gain acceptance.

SLIDESHOW: Highline Public Schools Jamboree got seasons going for many area track athletes

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Gotta go.
That saying means different things like, the less obvious meaning one, to many, "Got to go to the bathroom, now" or, the more obvious, "I must leave, now," if talking on the phone, doing texting, etc.

Those two words aptly explain one runner's mentality in one race of the 13 track and field events, total, involving four teams' athletes -- Mount Rainier, Tyee, Evergreen and Highline -- at the 2015 Highline Public Schools Jamboree Friday.

The Rams' Yamonee Rhodes, a player on the football team in the fall, runs track. He was running in the 200-meter dash at the jamboree, saying certain words, afterward, having taken first place -- words that cause one to stop and think.
"I just thought I had to go," said Rhodes, talking, after his race, which, when more information is given, tells everyone that Rhodes had no competition in his race, literally. He was the only one in the second heat of the 200, so he had no one to pass, no one to go catch, and beat, in his race.
