Kent man dies in Tukwila Crash

Emergency responders and Harborview Medical Center staff were unable to revive a 45-year-old Kent man after a crash in Tukwila that left traffic backed up for six miles on I-5 South. According to the King County Sheriff’s Department, the incident took place when a semi truck driver on southbound I-5 attempted to merge onto I-405 just after 4 p.m. on Monday, March 30th. A collision occurred when the Kent man, driving a yellow 2004 Volkswagen Golf, suddenly changed lanes and hit the rear wheels of the semi truck’s trailer. Witnesses attempted to perform CPR on the man before he was rushed to Harborview but all attempts were unsuccessful. Wreckage from the accident and traffic took several hours to clear. Traffic was stopped as far north as Georgetown.

They get to support local businesses by being here and participating in our Passport to White Center event. It builds community unity by bringing our three main nonprofits together and its supporting a good cause.

Police blotter Week of 4-6-15

By Tim Clifford

Burglars in the living room
On Mar. 28, at around 11:13 a.m., police received a call from a woman living on the 8800 block of 18 Ave. S.W. that two men had broken into her home and still there as she was calling. Multiple officers nearby were dispatched to the address and arrived within minutes of the call.

According to the victim she had heard a knock at her door minutes earlier but was too busy getting ready for the day to go downstairs and answer it. Shortly after this the victim went downstairs and began making herself breakfast and coffee when she heard a noise in her backyard. Looking out her window she noticed broken glass on the ground and a wheelbarrow turned on its side.

The victim went outside to inspect and was checking along the side of her home when she heard noises coming from inside. As she was heading to her front yard the victim called a neighbor for help and then decided to inspect her house again.

What makes a wonder woman?

By Kyra-lin Hom

Wonder Woman, in all her thigh-bearing, corset-wearing glory, is arguably one of the most iconic female characters in American media. She originally emerged onto the comic page in 1941 as the first female superhero under the pen of writer William Moulton Marston, and has since launched into the feminist hall of fame. It's no surprise then that her soon-to-be live action film revival has sparked a storm of social and fandom controversy.

For those not in the nerdy-know, please stick with me. I promise we'll be leaving the comic book realm shortly.

Pat's View: Chair Crisis

By Pat Cashman

While out for a jog recently---a jog that turned into a sprint when a German Shepherd came after me---I noticed a “For Lease” sign sitting in the empty window of a failed restaurant. After Cujo got distracted and ran after a bicyclist, I strolled back to the restaurant and peered in the window.

I knew that restaurant. I’d almost had a meal there once. But it was not to be. And I think I now know why the place didn’t survive.
The reason is startling.

You see, in this still struggling economy---with its still intermittent shortages of gas, water and expensive large-bore drilling machines that work---there is yet another shortage that has gone unreported.
Until now.

What follows is my exclusive and stunning conclusion:
A few years ago, my wife and I made reservations at the restaurant mentioned above. It was a fondue place we had never been to before---or ever again as it turned out.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Kimball Allen’s live talk/variety show “Triple Threat” at the Triple Door, featuring ArtWest’s Mathew Wright and Chelsea Le Valley

By Amanda Knox

On Friday, April 3, the Triple Door hosted the inaugural performance of Kimball Allen’s talk and variety show, “Triple Threat,” directed by Emma Hassett. Allen confesses that his dream is to establish it as a “Seattle staple.” So how did it go? Well, it came across like the pilot of a new TV show: a good idea, entertaining, not yet fully formed. Here are the DO and DON’T suggestions on how to make Allen’s dream come true:

DO integrate emerging and established Pacific Northwest talent. Allen started off with an excellent balance: reknown author Dan Savage, entertainer Mama Tits, and the Captain Smartypants ensemble of the Seattle Men’s Chorus next to lesser known but emerging aerial artist Tanya Brno, storyteller Summer Waldron, comedian Wilfred Padua, and actress Chelsea Le Valley.

'Encouragement Rally' and march draw attention to Terminal 5 oil exploration gear storage lease

In a very respectful march and “encouragement rally” sponsored by GreenParty.org a group of people marched from the West Seattle Junction to near the Chelan Cafe and the currently closed Port of Seattle Terminal 5 on Sunday to urge the Seattle City Council to revisit their decision to allow Shell Oil to store oil drilling equipment at the Terminal 5 site.

A group of around 60 people carrying banners and signs made the march, in an effort to raise awareness for the issue. Spokesperson for the group, Alki Bike and Board owner Stu Hennesey, spoke about the reasoning behind the event.

“This is very disrespectful to do this without any public hearings. The only public hearing they had was with the Seattle City Council and they only found out three days before that had it. The people there were overwhelmingly against this lease agreement.

Shell oil company is the only company left doing exploring and the number of accidents they’ve had up there is the primary reason,” Hennesey explained.
