KCSO fires deputy after he gets drunk, loses gun and badge, and assaults Tacoma police officer

Chris Dearth, a (former) Sheriff’s deputy working with the SeaTac Police Department was fired May 1 following an investigation into a boating incident that occurred along the Tacoma Narrows in January. Reportedly Dearth got drunk, operated a small motor boat, left his gun and badge on the dock and assaulted police officers who confronted him.

On Jan. 19, around noon, the 28-year-old off duty deputy took off in a small motor boat from the Narrows Marina in Tacoma. Dearth was spotted by marina workers, who also observed that he appeared drunk, speeding towards an off limit area of the marina where there are low hanging electrical wires. After getting his boat tangled in the lines and causing over $300 worth of damage Dearth left the scene.

About 90 minutes after this sighting a group of teenagers and a photographer reported to marina staff and police that they had found Dearth’s badge and gun sitting on the dock.

Around 3 p.m. the Tacoma Fire Department received a call from a resident who lives near the water that Dearth’s boat was now floating aimlessly and inoperable in the water with Dearth passed out on the deck.

Ballard bests West Seattle 3-1 to take Metro title

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

Ballard bested West Seattle, 3-1, Friday night to capture the Metro League softball tournament championship.
The win at the Southwest Athletic Complex advanced the Beavers into next week's Class 3A Sea-King District 2 tournament as the Metro League's No. 1 seed while the Wildcats go on as the No. 2 seed.
West Seattle had beaten Ballard and Bainbridge in a tiebreaker the previous week for the regular season division crown.

Ballard awaits Monday's winner between Roosevelt and Seattle Prep for its opener at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Southeast Athletic Complex near Rainier Beach High School.

West Seattle plays at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the SWAC near Chief Sealth High School against the winner of Monday's battle between Holy Names and the Kingco No. 3 team.

Both Ballard and West Seattle are in the double-elimination portion of the tournament that skips to Thursday and Friday after their openers.

Chief Sealth, meanwhile, also took a loss Friday, being outslugged by Roosevelt, 14-11, in the game for seventh and eighth place in the Metro League tournament.

Large drydock headed for Vigor Seattle

information from Vigor Seattle

The 14,000-long ton capacity drydock Vigilant that will support hundreds of family-wage industrial jobs at Vigor Industrial’s shipyard on Harbor Island is scheduled to arrive in Elliott Bay late Saturday or early Sunday.

The 528-foot long drydock, which is being towed from Portland by tugs from Seattle’s Harley Marine Services, will enable Vigor to continue to compete with California and U.S. Gulf Coast shipyards for ship repair, maintenance and construction contracts. The Vigilant replaces a sister drydock that was decommissioned in February.

“This is a needed and valuable asset for our Seattle yard, our workers and the local maritime economy,” said Adam Beck, Vigor’s executive vice president of ship repair. “We were temporarily down to one drydock and getting back to two will enable us to continue to perform construction, repair and maintenance work of a scope that few other shipyards anywhere can match.”

Idealism drives the People's Republic of Music in White Center

Vik Puri and Nikhi Aum are idealists.

When they closed their printing business in Vancouver B.C. in 2008 they wanted to pursue ways of fulfilling the mandates of their heroes Mahatma Gahdhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

Both of Indian descent the couple did some volunteering and chose to explore an opportunity to serve the "food desert" along Delridge Way SW by opening a fruit, spice and vegetable stand they called Martin's Way in 2012. But when the Delridge Produce Co-op came along with plans to do it as well, the couple chose to bow out.

It's been difficult admits Puri, but through it all, their idealism survived, and so did the purpose of Martin's Way.

Now it's being put to a new use in the form of what Puri calls "The People's Republic of Music" now under construction in White Center at the corner of 112th SW and Ambaum Blvd. SW. in what was once the Firedog Inn.
