Cab driver wounded in crossfire of drive-by shooting

By Tim Clifford

In an unfortunate case of “wrong place, wrong time” a cab driver was seriously wounded in Des Moines Monday night after being caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting.

The 50-year-old driver, whose name has not been disclosed at this time, had just dropped off a fare at a home in the 21800 block of 30 Ave. S., a residential area that is close to the SeaTac city line. As the cabbie was driving away he noticed a green Ford Expedition, with its passengers hanging out of the windows and armed with guns, coming in the opposite lane. At the same time the driver also noticed three men standing across the street in front of a small apartment complex.

As the Ford was passing the cab its passengers opened fire in the direction of the three men on the street with an estimated fifteen rounds being fired. One bullet blew out the driver’s side window and hits the cab driver in the upper body, exiting through his lower right abdomen. The cabbie sped away and sought help at the 7-11 on 216 St.

The Dining Hall was designed by Marvel Johnson, a former camper and one of the first female graduates of the University of Washington School of Architecture.    The Covenant Beach Bible Camp Historic District consists of eight rustic craftsman style camp buildings influenced by Swedish heritage and located within the eighteen acre Des Moines Beach Park at 22030 Cliff Avenue South in Des Moines. Auto Theft/Break-in:

Hungry kids can’t learn

by Representative Mia Gregerson

A hearty breakfast is a sure way to get your day started off right. A bowl of soup can warm you up when it’s cold outside. Food nourishes our bodies and our souls and it is one of life’s basic necessities.
Far too many kids are hungry, not only at home, but at school. We often think of hunger in third world countries - in parts of the world where there is no running water and people live in community housing. But the problem of hunger is all around us.

The numbers are horrific: 20 percent of our kids live in a household where there isn’t enough to eat. Why would we think our students can learn how to solve a challenging math problem when their immediate REAL LIFE problem is sustaining life? We must break down barriers that keep them from accessing enough healthy nutritious food.

It is unacceptable that in 2015, in Washington state, home to some of the wealthiest people in the world, there are children without enough to eat.

29-year-old man caught in online pedophile sting by Burien PD

By Tim Clifford

On Wed., May 10, the Burien Police Department took to Twitter and Facebook to announce the arrest of 29-year-old Marcus Enriquez following an online sting operation to catch child predators. Enriquez had begun corresponding with a male undercover officer posing as a 15-year-old girl on social media and eventually asked to meet for a sexual encounter.

Less than two weeks ago Burien PD opened up an account on social media (the platform was kept undisclosed) posing as a 15-year-old girl living in Burien. Within mere minutes of the account going live Enriquez, along with numerous other adult males who currently have yet to arrange a meeting, began sending messages asking for verification of the sex, age and address of the girl. It was just a matter of hours before he began sending naked pictures of himself to the account along with sexually graphic messages.

LETTER: A money squeeze?

To the editor:
The exercise class at Des Moines Field house is cut from 2 classes to one class with anticipation by the instructor that there would be no more than 30 exercisers. So far the average class size has been 42. Her rationale: to save money for the Park Department, even though we exercisers pay $4/class plus our property taxes. I protest this squeeze.
