The Arts in Nature Festival will return on August 22-23 at Camp Long in West Seattle. The festival is an eclectic experience of music, art, and performance in the woods of Seattle’s only camp ground. The diverse lineup of over 40 artists includes music from indie rock to traditional Japanese folk, plus dance performance, poetry, and audio/visual installations in the Museum of Sound.

Highlights of the artist lineup include Stranger Genius nominee Clyde Peterson, who will be presenting his multimedia installation Boating with Clyde and performing with indie rock band Your Heart Breaks. Karl Blau, iji, Mako & Munjuru, Hollow Earth Radio, and Althea Fantast Dance Collective are also on the lineup for the weekend.

The “arts in nature” concept encourages artists and audience members to engage in active participation both with each other and with the natural landscape of Camp Long. Blind Baseball Team plays Tacoma’s First Blind Baseball team

As fundraiser for Guide Dog Users of Washington State

The Seattle South King Sluggers, a project of the South King Council of the Blind (SKB), is the first blind baseball team in the Seattle/South King area.
Beep Baseball is played on a smaller field and the rules are altered to give blind players an opportunity to hit the ball.  The ball emits a beeping tone which blind batters focus on, and the bases emit another tone giving runners audio cues to locate the correct base.

“This is a fabulous opportunity for blind and sighted folks to mix, mingle, and play baseball.  I am so proud that SKB took this on as a project,” says Gaylen Floy, SKB President.

“I believe with all my heart in blind people and their capabilities.  Where ever I’ve lived, we’ve had a beep baseball team; after living in Burien for only a year, I knew the Seattle area should be no exception.  It gives me tremendous joy to hear and feel the successes of my blind brothers and sisters as they gain more confidence in themselves through playing beep baseball,” said Kevin Daniel, SKB Treasurer and founder of Seattle South King Sluggers.

Cab driver wounded in crossfire of drive-by shooting

By Tim Clifford

In an unfortunate case of “wrong place, wrong time” a cab driver was seriously wounded in Des Moines Monday night after being caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting.

The 50-year-old driver, whose name has not been disclosed at this time, had just dropped off a fare at a home in the 21800 block of 30 Ave. S., a residential area that is close to the SeaTac city line. As the cabbie was driving away he noticed a green Ford Expedition, with its passengers hanging out of the windows and armed with guns, coming in the opposite lane. At the same time the driver also noticed three men standing across the street in front of a small apartment complex.

As the Ford was passing the cab its passengers opened fire in the direction of the three men on the street with an estimated fifteen rounds being fired. One bullet blew out the driver’s side window and hits the cab driver in the upper body, exiting through his lower right abdomen. The cabbie sped away and sought help at the 7-11 on 216 St.
