Hot Cakes Wins Sofi Award

Molten Cakes Take the Gold

The namesake product of Autumn Martin’s company, the famous decadent and organic take-and-bake molten chocolate cakes, snagged the gold at the Summer Fancy Food show in New York!

Hot Cakes’ Dark Decadence Organic Molten Chocolate Cake won a sofiTM Award—the awards given by the Specialty Food Association—in the “Cookies, Brownies, Cakes, or Pie” category, chosen by an expert panel last Monday, June 29, in New York City.

In 2014, Hot Cakes’ S’mores Kit won in the “Best Food Gift” category and the Smoked Chocolate Chips and Vegan Salted Caramel Sauce were both finalists—Martin and the team were delighted to have their work recognized again this year.

Martin is honored and humbled that her creation has received this prestigious, national award, and is excited that the fine food community is applauding an organic dessert.

Georgie's View: Use it or lose it, you hear?

By Georgie Bright Kunkel

That is the advice that I give to anyone who asks me how I managed to live so long. Of course, the measure of living a long life is programmed in your genes but don’t underestimate healthy living including exercise every day. If you could see me in the morning when I first get out of bed (heaven forbid) you would catch me doing my tendon stretches. There is no way to keep tendons healthy without doing these exercises. As one gets older the activity level isn’t what it was when we were youngsters, right? I used to do handsprings and summersaults in my youth. You won’t catch me doing those much these days. So we have to intentionally concentrate on moving every part of the body.

West Seattle won its way to Woodinville with a 13-3 win over PacWest Wednesday.

The District 7 Majors age 11-12 Little League all-star baseball championship win over the Burien and SeaTac-based team was the third in a row for the Westsiders -- including a 2-0 victory over PacWest in the winner's bracket final Saturday.

With the win in the four-team tournament that also included South Highline National and Renton the West Seattle contingent earned its charter's second-straight Majors state appearance.
Last year's tournament was played at West Seattle's own Bar-S complex, while this year's tournament takes place at the Northwest Athletic Fields in Woodinville.

Max Debiec, who faced all but the final two batters in Wednesday's game that was stopped after the fifth inning by a 10-run rule, was one of the players who went to state Majors last year.

'There's something wrong here' say the Duwamish of denial of federal recognition

Duwamish tribal leader Cecile Hansen, in an emotional and passionate press conference at the Tribal Longhouse and Cultural Center on West Marginal Way SW July 8, vowed that the tribe would battle on for federal recognition despite the "final" denial issued earlier this month by the Dept. of Interior.

"We are still here" said Hansen, flanked by other tribal leaders.

The denial came in the form of a letter from R. Lee Fleming, Director Office of Federal Acknowledgement on July 2.

The letter reads in part:

Dear Ms. Hansen:
The petition for Federal Acknowledgement as an Indian tribe of the group known as the Duwamish Tribal Organization (Petitioner #25) has been reviewed under Part 83 of Title 25 of the Code of Federal Regulations, (25 CFR Part 83), "Procedures for Establishing that an American Indian Tribe Exists as an Indian Tribe." Based on the available evidence, the Department has determined that Petitioner #25 is not entitled to be acknowledged as an Indian tribe within the meaning of Federal law.

Little League
The road to Williamsport by way of Woodinville and San Bernardino starts Wednesday and maybe Thursday for either West Seattle or PacWest.
The two teams will play for the District 7 Major Little League (age 11-12) title at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the PacWest complex between Burien and SeaTac off Des Moines Way.
West Seattle hopes to get the issue over with that day with a win, while PacWest will be trying to force a second game for the state berth in Woodinville at 6 p.m. Thursday.
State starts July 25 for the winner, and from there the team would need to win the state title to get to Western Regionals in San Bernardino. The team would then need to win regionals to get to the World Series in Williamsport, Penn.

Meanwhile, the District 7 champion West Seattle Intermediate (50 foot away mound and 70 foot basepaths) team will open its state tournament Sunday at 12 p.m. at the South Kitsap West complex.
West Seattle will be awaiting its opponent as it has a first round bye.
