Early return fades into memory for Rams

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

Mount Rainier showed flashes of brilliance Friday, but not quite enough to find the end zone or split the uprights in a 35-0 non-league loss to Kentlake.

The brightest moment came right off the bat.

Edwin Armstead returned the opening kickoff from his own 8-yard line to the Kentlake 18 for a total of 74 yards, sprinting down the right sideline.

The Rams could only manage one more yard over three attempts, however, and a bad snap cost them a 35-yard field goal attempt.

Kentlake met a similar fate on its first drive.

A 52-yard pass from Trey Helgeson to Mitchell Lockhart moved the ball to the Mount Rainier 21, then the Rams' defense pushed the Falcons back two yards over three plays.

Tyler Padilla tried a 40-yard field goal but came up short.

Mount Rainier turned the ball over on a Jesus Lomeli interception on a drive that made it as far as the Rams' 45-yard line, and Kentlake scored on the ensuing drive.

Helgeson faked to Eddie Edwards and kept the ball for a 9-yard touchdown run to the right.

The Normandy Park Arts Commission Presents Artwork of Giel Ahn

September- October, 2015 Reception on October 8th, 2015 7:00 - 9:00 pm.

The Normandy Park Arts Commission is pleased to present an exhibit showcasing the colorful paintings of Giel Ahn, in Normandy Park City Hall Council Chambers during the months of September and October, 2015.

Giel Ahn, an autistic young man, expresses himself beautifully through striking and powerful contemporary paintings. Bold brush strokes, carefully chosen color placement in combination with an overall interesting and evocative design, his work catches the viewer’s attention. Giel Ahn works in acrylics using a vivid color palette whether he chooses a realistic or an abstract design. Even though they are but his voice from within, Giel’s artworks speak ‘loudly’ and convey his feelings, his emotions, and his joy for life. Unspoken words become language once this young artist picks up a canvas, a brush, and paint.

Ira Milton ZEASMAN

March 6, 1921 ~ August 25, 2015

Born March 6, 1921, in Madison, Wisconsin, to Gladys (Andrews) and Otto Zeasman, Ira Zeasman was hugely influenced by Charles Lindberg’s flight over the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris in 1927.

As a very young boy, Ira was captivated by flight, and this fascination continued throughout his 94 years.

His first airplane ride at age 11, without his mother’s permission, was in a “Robin” that took off from frozen Lake Mendota (a reward for guarding the plane while the pilot had lunch).

Ira attended West High in Madison, where he met Jean Niebuhr in band class and their friendship blossomed as they shared a music stand. “Zeas” entered the University of Wisconsin where he majored in mechanical engineering and at the same time earned his pilot license through the Civilian Pilot Training Program. A favorite family story is that Zeas would fly his Waco biplane over Jean’s family farm doing aerobatic maneuvers to gain her attention.

MAYOR’S DAY OF CONCERN FOR THE HUNGRY LAUNCHES CITY OF BURIEN FOOD DRIVE

Food Donations Invited through October 1

BURIEN, WASH. – How often have you tried to sleep on an empty stomach? Do you have to go to work or school hungry? Chances are, someone you know experiences hunger on a recurring basis. According to Feeding America, one in seven Americans struggle to put dinner on the table regularly. Without options like the Highline Area and White Center Food Banks, hunger would be experienced even more frequently by families whose resources are stretched too thin.

Because hunger neither begins nor ends with the holidays, the City’s annual staff food drive competition is moving from December to September to coincide with the Mayor’s Day of Concern for the Hungry, September 19. The Emergency Feeding Program of Seattle and King County will host their annual food drive tomorrow at grocery stores around the region, but Burien will take the Mayor’s Day of Concern a step farther by continuing to collect food through October 1.
