Anyone who knew Joannie - either as a mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, co-worker, or friend - knew she represented the best of all of us. She was a best friend and advisor to many.

Joannie loved the outdoors, Alaska, the family river cabin and her beach cabin. Most of all, Joannie loved her family and close friends.

A a hairdresser on Capitol Hill in Seattle for many years, Joannie ended her working career at Weyerhaeuser in Everett.

She married Clyde Zettle in 1981 and together, they enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas and Reno, as well as wonderful times on Camano Island, the site of many fun family gatherings. Joannie was an easy and relaxed host and was always up for a good time with family and friends. Everyone was always welcome at her home.

“The Addams Family,” running at Burien Actors Theatre from Oct. 2 through Nov. 1, 2015.

by Aya Takechi

Okay, let’s get the Addams Family cliches out of the way right now: They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky. (Insert theme music and snapping fingers here.) Need a hand with that opening number? Why, yes. Thank you, Thing.

The Addams Family has been a household name for at least three generations of comedy lovers. If you’re not familiar with the wonderfully dark cartoons by Charles Addams in the New Yorker magazine, then you probably know them from their 1960’s sit-com or the series of movies from the 1990’s.

But now, add a Tony-nominated musical score and a chorus of dancing ghostly ancestors, and you get the general idea of the finger-snapping fun in store for you at Burien Actors Theatre.

Opening their 2015-16 season with a ghoulish evening of song and silliness, BAT has brought us the latest adventures of Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Fester, Grandmama and Lurch to the stage.

Home and Business Larceny/Burglary:

Lenny Wilkens will speak at Wesley Homes Oct. 13

Wesley Homes Retirement Communities and Home Health Services welcomes three-time NBA Hall of Famer and former Seattle SuperSonics player Lenny Wilkens to its Des Moines campus on Tuesday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. Call 206-824-5000 to RSVP.

Wilkens will review growing up in Bedford-Stuyvesant, NY, “a true melting pot,” said Wilkins. “On my street was a German deli, a Jewish grocery, an Italian market. Within a few streets were all kinds of people.”

He will also discuss the Lenny Wilkens Foundation, which has raised $7.5 million to support programs and services for children in the Puget Sound area, his faith, having an absent father and how he did not let the conditions of his youth confine him.

“You can either allow your circumstances to be a trap that snares you the rest of your life, or you can use them to learn what it takes to succeed in a world where things won’t always go your way,” said Wilkens.

Jerry’s View: Boom & Bust

Economic view from 1957 and before

From time to time we will run columns by former publisher Jerry Robinson.  We go through the archives to find suitable content for our present day readers.  Jerry passed away in May of 2014 after more than 60 years as owner/publisher of this newspaper.

Nobody has ever given us a clear picture of why we have boom and bust cycles in the economy of the United States but the fact remains that we do have them and will probably continue to have them.

We were discussing this situation with one of our readers the other day when he suddenly remembered a clipping he had been carrying around in his wallet for the past nine years that pertained to the subject.

It was a chart of the economic cycle of the United States. It appeared in the Minneapolis Tribune in 1946. According to the Trib writer, the chart was first made prior to the Civil War. The original was found in an old desk drawer in Philadelphia in 1902.

We have no way of knowing, of course or of verifying this fact but careful scrutiny of the chart, which we have reproduced here, will reveal some startling statistics

Alley art moves inside at Burien Arts Gallery in October

Don’t miss graffiti mural artists Sneke X and They Drift at Burien Arts Gallery.

Their work is the focus of an excitingly different October exhibit at the Gallery, 826 S.W. 152nd St. in Olde Burien.

Sneke One is a fixture in Seattle’s graffiti art and hip-hop scene. He and his crew have left an indelible mark on the Pacific Northwest and cities throughout the world including New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Geneva and Paris.

Known for “style writing” Sneke has been delivering dynamic, aerosol murals for over 20 years. He transforms a variety of shapes, symbols and letters into colorful bursts of abstract magnificence.

In the past several years, Sneke has moved to a multimedia platform, creating contemporary urban-inspired pieces with canvas, vinyl foam core and layered wood.

They Drift (Carlos Aguilar and Ksra) are a couple of daydreaming drifters that have been collaborating for many years through their public art campaigns and mural painting across the globe.

A new story comes to life with each large-scale whimsical mural. They Drift is constantly finding new ways of letting everyone feel at home.

Artists United also presents a photography exhibit featuring Tom Fletcher and Chris Gonvers.
