Save the Date-Shop Small Saturday-November 28th

Discover Burien is proud to participate again this year as a neighborhood champion for Small Business Saturday®. This year Small Business Saturday is November 28th. What is Small Business Saturday? It’s a day to celebrate and support our small businesses in Burien and all they do for our community.

When we shop local we support the businesses owned by our friends and neighbors. We contribute to the investment in our community. An article published by the American Independent Business Alliance indicates that “for every dollar we spend locally, three dollars comes back to our community”. Small Businesses are also more likely to donate to local charities, sports teams and non-profits. They, like you, are invested in our community. Small Business Saturday is our chance to thank our small businesses for all that they do for us through out each year.

Annette Lusher shows her art in Normandy Park

A small crowd of enthusiasts attend showing Nov.13 of the work of artist Anette Lusher in Normandy Park.

According to the Artist, Anette Lusher, "My work is exuberant. I respond to life and nature with a passionate need to depict, interpret and create.  When I am at work in my studio, I spend countless hours contemplating a particular form and color in order to feel their energy.  Inspiration comes from music, feelings, nature and travels, the stories I am so often told by other people, and my personal experiences."

About her art, Lusher said "In the end I hope to have created a piece of art that conveys my visions and motions.  When someone relates to my work and interprets it in a personal way, I feel rewarded.  The tactile appearances of many of my paintings is achieved in integral parts through built-up, pooled, scraped, layered, or dibbled paint.  Each layer acts as a metaphor for time's passage, the same way life unfolds."

According to her bio, she "has shown nationally and internationallyand is held in numerous private and corporate collections" around the world.

New Google STEM Grant Supports Burien’s Burgeoning Salmon Heroes

Burien kids have been getting wet and muddy this fall, and learning valuable lessons about our ecosystem along the way. The Environmental Science Center (ESC) has kicked off the fall sessions of their Salmon Heroes program, which provides classroom and field study programs to local kids, giving them opportunities to investigate important environmental issues.

This year ESC’s Salmon Heroes program has benefited from a generous grant from Google, as well as other financial supporters. These grants will support them in their annual goals to close the opportunity gap for low-income students through environmental science field studies. Google’s regional charitable giving focuses largely on improving access to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs and green initiatives. The ESC Salmon Heroes program is a unique fit, since it links the environmental and STEM fields.

Hollywood stunt woman Kristina Baskett grateful for Highline’s support of career aspirations

Highline boasts a long list of well-known and accomplished alumni and dozens of grads you haven't yet heard of who are making their mark on the world. One of those graduates is Kristina Baskett, a 2005 Mount Rainier High School graduate.

Highline is featuring Kristina in this month’s #HighlineAlum social media campaign. She currently works as a TV and movie stunt woman. Some of Kristina’s stunt work includes Modern Family, Glee, Scandal, Into the Storm, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. She has also performed in Viva Elvis, a Cirque Du Soleil live show.

Kristina started her career early as a gymnast. After becoming a Junior Olympic Champion, she earned a full ride gymnastics scholarship to the University of Utah, where Kristina finished her college career as an NCAA Champion on the uneven bars, 12-time All-American, and earned 7 NCAA medals all together.
