You Are What You Eat: Persimmons — Winter lanterns lighting up dark days

By Katy Wilkens, MS, RD

Persimmons are fruits that ripen late in the fall, hanging like bright orange lanterns on small trees among the autumn leaves. There are three basic kinds of Asian persimmons: the Fuyu, which looks like a pumpkin with a flattened top and bottom; the chocolate persimmon, brown on the inside and slightly spicy, sweet and creamy; and the Hachiya, which is more bulbous and heart-shaped. In my garden I have an Asian and American hybrid called Nikita's Gift. It’s the most likely persimmon to produce fruit west of the Cascades, but I am still patiently waiting. The smaller American persimmons are supposed to do better in our colder, wet climate, but most will need a pollinator.

Are you still mad about the changes on 35th SW? SDOT says it's safer with minimal impacts

Opinions vary widely and the work is only half done

When the Seattle Department of Transportation announced they were going to put 35th SW on a "road diet," converting the four lanes to three, and reducing the speed to 30mph, it resulted in controversy. SDOT's reasoning was that the changes would make what had come to be be known as "I-35" much safer.

The benefits SDOT stressed were:

  • Reduction in crash frequency
  • Lower speeds results in fewer severe crashes
  • Improved parking conditions
  • Addresses correctable collision patterns
  • Less exposure for pedestrians
  • Potential low cost crossing improvements
  • Maximum capacity turn pockets
  • Easier turns to and from 35th
  • Transit efficiency treatments (no bus bulbs)
  • Minimal impact to traffic

The first half of the road changes were begun in September and completed in October including:

• One lane in each direction
• Center turn lane

The Marée Bistro & Bar is now open, after a grand opening on Feb. 4.

Original post 1/13/16
Marée Bistro & Bar will replace the former Cassis on the Alki waterfront in West Seattle and plans to open later this month. Cassis closed in December after operating for nearly two years.

In a press release about the change the new owners said:

Chef Andy Dekle and Megan Hartz were part of the opening team of critically acclaimed Cassis-Alki Restaurant and remained during the entirety of its two year run. The pair are formally trained chefs, having attended Seattle Culinary Academy and the Art Institute of Seattle, respectively. Although the restaurant name is new, many of the same staff will be there to offer a friendly welcome when Marée (“Mah-ray”) opens later this month.

Megan is assuming the management position and will be in charge of the wine list which has a strong emphasis on small, quality producers. The beachfront bistro & bar will feature the same seasonal, market inspired French cuisine with a Northwest flavor that guests have come to expect from Chef Andy Dekle.

At Large In Ballard: The Best Intentions

By Peggy Sturdivant

At least in my circles we don’t say goals anymore, or resolutions. We set ‘intentions’ for the New Year. Some of us the moment before we plunge into Puget Sound, many while sitting on a yoga mat, others on origami paper before tossing written words into the flames. When I used to set goals I recorded them on airline cocktail napkins flying back to Seattle, now a record of my changing priorities and a retrospective on airline mergers.

For 2016 I resolved, I mean set an intention, to be more positive, to think carefully before I speak. My first efforts resulted in being asked why was I suddenly so quiet?

The effort to look on the upside rather than down was prompted in part by a teenager. Her aunt asked her to read one of my columns aloud to her while she cooked. The thirteen year-old balked because it looked too political, and by implication, negative. “I’m so tired of hearing everyone complain about Ballard,” she said, confused because how is she supposed to feel when she loves it?
