This month I am talking about the sweetest thing since a poodle in a tutu. Spot prawns are a locally caught prawn that will pop up in your specialty fish markets very soon. These prawns are a delicious nutritious delicacy and with a limited supply, so call your local seafood shop and ask about them. Here are a few shops near you:

Good for you: Spot on Shirnp-Prawns

By Kathryn Kingen

I remember the first time I tasted prawns. I had just moved to the Northwest from Minnesota and the closest thing I had ever seen to these beady-eyed creepers were the toe pinching mudbugs at the bottom of our lakes. Our family's first taste of spot prawns was piled high in the kitchen, and my Dad said, "Dig in, kids, and if you're really brave, you'll slurp the juices right out of the head." What, are you kidding me? Of course I did it, it was a great way to get my Dad's proud smile when you're from a brood of six kids. But yum! The head was delicious. It tasted like sweet ocean juices. Peeling off the shell, the body had a firm bite bursting with succulent salty flavor. On that day a new family favorite was born.

Ballard resident and heart transplant survivor to ride along in Iditarod

A Ballard woman and heart transplant survivor will participate as a tag sled driver in the opening ceremony of Alaska’s legendary Iditarod dog sled race on Saturday, March 5.

Diane Bedell will drive a tag sled for the ceremonial start of the race behind the sled of Jan Steves of Edmonds, Wash. This is Steves’ fifth Iditarod.

“This is definitely a bucket list item,” says Bedell. “But each day to me is a bucket list item since getting my new heart. It is a greatest gift I ever could have hoped for.”

Diane has been involved with dog sledding for over 20 years, and her history includes being an outfitter guide in Minnesota for nine years.

During the ceremony Diane will honor organ donation and Life Center NW, an organ procurement organization. She hopes to draw attention to the need for organ donors and the impact donors can make on others in need. According to Life Center NW, 22 people die every day waiting for transplants.

“I really want to make it about celebrating donation and the gift of life and my donor’s family.”

Update: Mark Driscoll, former Mars Hill leaders sued for fraud and racketeering

Update June 22, 2016

Last March the Ballard News-Tribune reported that the former leaders Mars Hill Church were being sued for racketeering and fraud by past congregation members. The lawsuit was filed under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.

According to Sutton Turner’s blog he was never served with the lawsuit.

“…My attorney filed a motion to dismiss the case that was pending against me. Even though the Jacobsens and Kildeas (Plaintiffs) and Brian Fahling (Plaintiff’s attorney) filed a 42-page document with the court and conducted TV interviews, they never served me with the lawsuit.”

“So effectively, we don’t have an active lawsuit because under Washington law they have 90 days to file, which has since passed”

The plaintiffs allege that the defendants, Mark Driscoll and Sutton Turner fraudulently used donated funds for their personal means. The plaintiffs claimed that funds were donated under the pretense they would be used for foreign missions.

The influential church with Ballard roots is making national headlines again, or at least the founders are.

Article courtesy of Gerardo Bolong

TACOMA - Simplicity of strategy and continuous attack mode delivered the Seattle Christian boys basketball team the 2016 West Central District III 1A championship in a 57-50 conquest of Nisqually No. 2 seed Cascade Christian High School on Sat., Feb. 20, on the Dalesky-Black court of Henry Foss Senior High School.

Seattle Christian (13-10) continues its quest of excellence on Sat., Feb 27, in a high noon showdown with Southwest Washington District IV No. 3 Hoquiam (19-5) in a 2016 Hardwood Classic state regional held at Renton High School for the right to reach the round of 16 at the Yakima Sun Dome. The Grizzlies tied 2A Aberdeen atop the 2A/1A Evergreen Conference ahead of district action. They are led by forward Jack Adamsill's nearly 22 points per game average and guard Jerod Steen(12.3). HHS steamrollered Eatonville to qualify for regionals.

In winning its first district title since 2003, the third place regular season Nisqually 1A League finisher kept its eye on the prize and focused strongly down the stretch.

You can make it your beeswax

By Lindsay Peyton

For artists and creative types who want to explore a new medium, Northwest Encaustics provides plenty of room to play with pigmented wax in a safe and inspiring environment.

The studio, located at 7150 44th Ave SW in West Seattle, comes complete with large work surfaces, plenty of ventilation and top notch instructors, as well as all the needed supplies and tools of the trade.

It’s an ideal launch pad for those who have been curious about encaustic painting, or the technique of adding color to hot beeswax and layering the medium to create detailed compositions and intricate collages.

There’s a full calendar of classes and workshops – from Kirsten Wihlelm’s introductory course to weekend workshops on specific techniques, like Larry Calkins’ encaustic collage seminar.

The studio is also available to rent by the day, week or month. The space doubles as a gallery, with rotating work on display by instructors and local artists.

The next exhibit will feature former students and will be on display as part of the West Seattle Art Walk from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14.
