Area athletes place in state action

Bowen McConville of Kennedy Catholic and Daron Camacho of West Seattle took two of the top three spots in the 195-pound weight class in the state Class 3A boys wrestling competition at the Tacoma Dome Saturday.
McConville placed second, reaching the championship match but taking a loss to Chance Stolz of Peninsula by pin in a time of 3 minutes, 39 seconds.
Camacho was upset, 4-3, in the quarterfinals but rebounded to capture third place.
Camacho won the third place match by a 4-2 score over Colton Paller of Shelton.
McConville and Camacho never faced each other in the state competition held Friday and Saturday.
Luis Cuellar of Foster finished sixth in the Class 2A competition at 126 pounds, losing the fifth place match by a 5-4 score in overtime.
Highline's Kevin Romero came in eighth in Class 2A at 106 pounds, dropping the match for seventh by a 3-1 score.
State boys swimming
Tyler Goodspeed of Highline lived up to his last name at the state Class 2A boys swimming competition that concluded Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Goodspeed won the 100-yard breaststroke preliminaries Friday in a time of 1:00.56 before being edged out in Saturday's finals.
Goodspeed finished third in the 50 freestyle finals in a time of 22.27 seconds.
Segie Dahl of West Seattle also fared well at the meet, taking fourth in the Class 3A 500 free in 4:46.65.
Ian Olufson was 14th for Kennedy in the same race with a 4:55.17 effort after taking 12th in the 200 free in 1:46.94.
Kennedy came in 14th in the 400 free relay to cap off the meet with a time of 3:27.80. Ty Lindblom, Jeff Kasahara, Olufson and Ben Kinerk made up the Lancers' team.
State Gymnastics
Mount Rainier freshman Naleia Gomes had a great effort for fourth place in the all-around and floor exercise in state Class 4A gymnastics action in the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.
Gomes posted an all-around score of 36.975 in Friday's all-around, then scored a 9.475 in the individual floor exercise competition held Saturday.
