original post 5/25/16
Ever since West Seattle Brewing announced it was taking over the former SLICES location at 2600 Marine Ave SW on Alki Beach there's been a buzz in the community. Will they still serve pizza? Will they have seating inside? and of course, when will they open?

That last and most important question is still up to the Washington State Liquor Control Board but it's looking likely it will happen in early June according to partners Drew Locke and Chris Alatorre.

White Center survey finds safety, housing top priorities

information from the WCCDA

White Center community members identified safety and housing, among other topics, as top community priorities in the 2016 White Center Community Survey.

The survey was conducted by the White Center Community Development Association in March and April 2016. A total of 590 community members completed the survey, including 158 middle and high school students.

When asked what issues community organizations should focus on to improve White Center, 54% of adults and 49% of youth identified safety as a top priority. Suggestions to improve safety included strengthening drug prevention, making public spaces more clean and inviting, increasing police presence, and expanding community-oriented policing programs. “Stronger internal family support, gang culture alternatives, safe drug use sites, decriminalizing minor drug use, infrastructure for individual empowerment,” one resident wrote.

City of Seattle Releases First Freight Master Plan for Public Review

The Seattle Department of Transportation released its draft Freight Master Plan (FMP) for public review. The draft FMP was developed by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) to address the unique characteristics, needs, and impacts of freight mobility in Seattle. It identifies why goods movement is so important to the City and the region, examines the challenges of moving goods, and provides solutions to address these challenges.

Just about every product purchased by someone reaches its final destination by some combination of truck, plane, train and ship. It is important for the City to identify a freight network that supports goods movement and delivery throughout Seattle.

The FMP is one of our City’s four modal master plans: pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and freight. With the Move Seattle plan providing Mayor Ed Murray’s 10-year strategic vision for all transportation modes, the City is seeking opportunities to integrate these plans and create a comprehensive multimodal system that safely moves people and goods.

“Seeing the Light: Four Decades in Chinatown”

Former reporter garners international attention after publishing first book

Aside from his camera, most people wouldn’t think Dean Wong to be a photographer who has attracted the praise from the New York Times and the South China Morning Post. He’s not a large man. There’s some graying stubble on his chin. He wears faded sneakers and an old bomber jacket. However, during a conversation with Wong, one quickly finds themselves to be in the presence of a keenly observant, introspective and deeply experienced person with a lifetime of story telling.

Wong, a former Ballard News-Tribune staffer, has published a book that has drawn international attention and given an inside view on China Towns in major cities including Seattle, San Francisco, New York and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Wong is a second generation Chinese American Seattle native. He’s also a self taught photojournalist and writer.

You Are What You Eat: Sweet and Simple!

By Katy Wilkens, MS, RD

Your parents may have taught you to set the dinner table with a salt shaker, but now we know the American diet of processed food contains so much salt it threatens our health. Luckily, there are lots of other choices to add sparkle to your meals. For instance, try a little sweetness.

Honey, sugar, molasses, sweet fruits, maple syrup or simple syrups can build big, bold flavor so you don’t need, and don’t miss, that extra salt in our diets that is killing one in seven Americans!

Sweet is an inborn taste all humans have from birth, but the taste for salt is learned. Newborn babies are indifferent to salty flavor; they have to be taught to like it. By age 2, most toddlers choose higher salt food. It doesn’t have to be that way.
