Give Your Children the Gift of (Financial) Knowledge

It’s almost Father’s Day. If you’re a dad with young children, you can expect some nice homemade cards and maybe even a baseball cap. But, of course, your greatest reward is spending time with your kids and watching them grow. In return, you can give them a gift – the gift of knowledge. Specifically, in the months and years ahead, teach them the financial skills that can help make their lives easier and more rewarding.

For starters, encourage your children to become savers. You can do this in a couple of different ways. First, set a good example. You might explain to your kids that you want to buy a certain item, but you are waiting for it to go on sale. Or, if it’s a particularly big-ticket item, like an ultra high-definition television, tell your children that you simply can’t afford it now, but that you are putting away some money each week until you can. You might even make a chart showing your progress.

King Co. Delegation Secures Boost in Local Rental Assistance

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) led the congressional delegation representing Washington’s King County in sending a letter to thank the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for answering their call for increased local rental assistance in 2016 to reflect the region’s rapidly escalating rental costs. The delegation also continued to press for a permanent fix to the inflation formula in the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program, which provides rental assistance to low-income households.

Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell joined Reps. DelBene, Jim McDermott, Adam Smith and Dave Reichert in sending a letter to HUD Secretary Julián Castro, following up on their letter from June 2015. The current HCV formula has been particularly damaging in areas with steep increases in rental costs, such as the Puget Sound region.

Highline College honors longtime nurse and Army veteran

Sandra Cravens Robinson named as 2016 Distinguished Alumna Award winner

DES MOINES, Wash. — Back in the early 1960s, 18-year-old Sandra Cravens had wanted to be a nurse ever since she could remember, so when she was accepted into a three-year nursing program, she gladly parted with $950 in tuition and headed to Portland, Oregon, to begin classes. When she first arrived on campus, she was greeted by the dean of nursing with, “Oh, I didn’t know you were Negro.” Cravens lasted about three months in that setting.

The all-white interview panel of another nursing school—this one in Seattle—was reluctant to enroll her because of her “big hair,” thinking she was better suited for waitressing. They consented to letting her “try” the one-year program for licensed practical nurses (LPN). She took this opportunity seriously, and in her words, “prayed, buckled down and worked hard.” She successfully passed the LPN boards.

Georgie's view: We Live in the Promised Land

by Georgie Bright Kunkel

The Hebrew  Bible states that the land from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates River was promised by God to Abraham and his descendants. My interest in all this came about after I recently viewed an old film about this time in history. I got to thinking about the Puget Sound region with its beauty and temperate climate. How fortunate am I to have been born into this wonderful part of the world.

Television brings views of war torn countries with famine and pestilence plaguing the population. But here I am in the best place in the world I
could have chosen to live my life.

West Seattle is still neighborhood friendly so I still know most of my close neighbors. In fact we will soon gather for a neighborhood meeting.
