Silent disco witnessed in Ballard over weekend

Ballardites were surprised to see a group of thirty oddly dressed individuals dancing in the streets of Ballard during the evening hours on July 30.

The Ballard New-Tribune was somewhere near the Ballard Annex Oyster House when the dancing throng approached. Though there wasn't a common theme to their varying costumes, all of these gyrating bodies brandished glowing neon-lit headphones.

BNT staff began taking photos and one of the dancers approached. The woman looked to be no older than 25 and was covered in sweat from dancing. She said she was part of a group called What The Float, a private dance party that uses public spaces as their personal dance hall. They acquire their music through headphones, which are synced to a common mp3 source, so all the dancers hear the same music. Their music is inaudible to onlookers. One simply sees a sea of people ornamented with neon lights and body paint dancing in silence. The party looks as if it was transposed from a 4 a.m. rave in SODO. This is also known as a “silent rave,” or “crazy phantom stomping” to people not privy to the rave scene.

Nordic Heritage Museum breaks ground for new museum project

Hundreds of people gathered on July 30 for a groundbreaking celebration at the site where the new Nordic Heritage Museum will one day be constructed.

Spectators consumed aquavit and feasted on salmon lox, Nordic flags flew, and skål songs were sung in honor of the new museum construction.

Mayor Ed Murray and Sen. Reuven Carlyle joined Nordic Heritage Museum Board of Trustees President, Irma Goertzen and CEO, Eric Nelson, as speakers in the ceremony. Dignitaries from Scandinavian countries including Finland, Norway, Sweden and Iceland joined trustees in breaking ground with gold-painted shovels.

“This is a very important step for us. … It’s really a question of survival. We need to move and this was the natural space for us to move to. It provides much better visibility and a great opportunity to modernize our facility,” said Nelson.

The new museum is the culmination of years of planning. The new 57,875 square-foot facility will be constructed at 2655 N.W. Market St., where Fenpro Studios used to reside. Demolition for the building was scheduled for last Monday.

Lindsay Peyton presents installation “Life, Examined" at artEAST

Meet the artist during the Downtown Issaquah Art Walk Friday, Aug. 5

Have a heartache that needs mending? Or a memory that deserves celebrating?

Then, step right in.

A new interactive art installation at artEAST in Issaquah may be the perfect place to revisit a time from the past or explore a current emotion.

The piece, entitled "Life, Examined," is artist Lindsay Peyton's own experiment, meant to explore, capture and answer questions from her own life and invite visitors to the exhibit to do the same.

Guests may walk through the lab during gallery hours – and meet the artist onsite during the Downtown Issaquah Art Walk from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5. The non-profit fine art gallery and art center is located at 95 Front St. North in Issaquah.

Peyton will keep regular artist hours – wearing her lab coat and performing experiments – from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. A closing reception for the exhibit is slated for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.

Peyton will also offer two altered books workshops at artEAST – from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, Aug. 18 and Aug. 25.
