Scarola will be responsible for leading the City’s homelessness efforts across departments, providing oversight and evaluation of outcomes, strategic guidance, and leading community engagement.

“Homelessness is a national epidemic, leaving cities like Seattle stepping in to fill the large gaps left behind by state and federal agencies,” said Mayor Murray, “We have made unprecedented investments in homelessness prevention and services. Because of the growing scope of work around homelessness, Seattle needs a proven manager to ensure we are achieving our desired outcomes. Ballard Walgreens pressed to hire security guard after armed robbery

After asking many stores in the area to hire a security officer, a Ballard woman now is urging Walgreens (5409 15th Ave N.W.) to do the same, especially after a recent armed robbery.

Janet Calkins lives four blocks from the Ballard QFC and eight blocks from the Bartell Drugs and Walgreens at 15th Avenue N.W.

Calkins said she called the Kroger Corporate office last year and urged them to get a security officer at QFC after a rash of robberies and assaults. She also said she spoke diligently with the Bartell Drugs management about hiring a guard.

“These stores need security officers to protect the customers, but more importantly the staff,” said Calkins.

Calkins said guards were hired at both stores. A Bartells representative could not confirm that they hired a guard because of Calkins, nor could they even confirm they have a guard because of security disclosure issues.

Trash pile at ‘Ballard Jungle’ spurs neighbor reaction

A heap of garbage growing at what some are calling the “Ballard Jungle” near the Ballard Locks has spurred one Ballard resident to cry foul.

Terry Pratt called the Mayor’s office twice and the Health Department last week after walking by the pile and seeing at least 20 bags of garbage just off the railroad tracks south off the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks parking area.

“This hill of garbage is not under a Freeway overpass, nor is it in an industrialized area. It is located in the parking lot of Hiram M. Chittenden Locks. A very big tourist attraction, if you didn't know. More importantly it is across the street from my HUD housing. It is a health and safety problem,” Pratt wrote to the City.

Firefighters put out electrical fire at Seattle’s Swansons Nursery

A fire broke out at Swansons Nursery early Monday morning, and Seattle Firefighters believe an electrical issue was the start to the flames.

According to the Ballard News-Tribune’s news partner, Q-13 Fox, a Seattle Fire Department representative said flames damaged a portion of a greenhouse at the nursery, which is located on the 9700 block of 15th Avenue NW.

Q-13 reported: “Fire broke through the glass of the greenhouse,” said Deputy Chief Tom Walsh. “It was extinguished pretty quickly. I would say about 15 minutes.”

SFD stated that the flames were limited to a small room within the large greenhouse.

Fire crews showed up in time to prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring properties.

Detectives investigating after two injured in West Seattle shooting

Information provided by Seattle Police Department.

Gang Unit detectives are investigating after two people were shot in West Seattle early Friday morning.
Witnesses called 911 at 2:15 am when a group of 40 people began fighting near 59 Ave. SW and Alki Ave. SW. Another caller said that two or three people now had guns and shots were being fired.

Officers arrived shortly after the shots but were unable to locate any victims. One caller found what he believed to be bullet damage to his home, but it was later determined to have been caused by a rock.
Two men drove up Harborview Medical Center at 2:30 am and checked themselves in for gunshot wounds.

One suffered a gunshot wound to the lower back, while the other was shot in the arm. Gang Unit detectives spoke with both men and determined they were shot during the fight along Alki. Detectives do not believe this was a random shooting and that the victims may have known their attackers. Detectives continue to investigate and will provide updates when available.

Amanda's View: And for my next tattoo…

By Amanda Knox

In a parallel, not-so-distant universe, I might have been a tattoo artist. In this one, I’m merely a tattoo person. I don’t have spider webs on my elbows or a big Chinese dragon coiled across my back. I don’t style my life or identity around being inked. That’s cool; just not for me. What I am is an enthusiast of the body as a canvas. I’m an admirer of the artistry. And I encourage everyone who’s on the fence about getting a tattoo to go for it. Just, be smart.
