Police Blotter Week of 10-24-16
Robbery of California Ave. pet shop
Next to Nature, a pet supply shop located on 4543 California Ave. S.W., was broken into sometime after closing on Sun., Oct. 16. Between the time the last employee left the store around 8:30 p.m. and before opening the next day, the back door had been pried open and three interior doors damaged. The co-owner of the store discovered that the safe was open and money stolen. The suspect left behind a yellow screwdriver. Police believe that once inside the suspect went immediately to the office, since no other areas of the store were disturbed. The victim said about $1,500 was missing from the safe, as well as a spare set of keys to the store. The suspect also took an iPad and a computer. The security cameras did not capture the crime, causing police to believe that the suspect might have prior knowledge of the layout of the security system. A former employee, who was fired after admitting to long-term theft of the business, may be responsible. Officers were only able to locate one fingerprint.

Amanda's View: Champion
By Amanda Knox
A world away, I still heard the stories. My friends wrote me letters. January to June, my childhood best friend was deep in Hillary Clinton’s primary campaign, extolling her virtues to folks who still owned a home phone. Other friends were all about Obama. After years of economic difficulty and military involvement abroad, Obama was a vision of hope and change, the vehicle for progressivism. Not to mention, Obama was also the most eloquent rhetorician and charismatic public speaker EVER, hadn’t a grey hair on his head, and upon earning the Democratic nomination, was the first black man to ever run for president. People were discussing politics over family dinners, in the hallways between class, over rounds of beer pong. They were going on marches and making art. On social media, they cried out “Yes We Can!” and on November 4th, 2008, my friends were dancing in the streets along with the rest of them.

UPDATE: Two Junction bus shelters to be removed; Comment period now extended
Update 11/4/16
The public comment period has been extended to Nov. 18 for the potential removal of two bus shelters in the West Seattle Junction was announced by King County Metro. The shelters are on the south side of SW Alaskan Street between California Ave SW and 44th Ave SW; the two shelters are the ones closest to 44th, between the alley and 44th. This would not affect the shelters to the east, between California and the alley. If you have comments, please contact dale.cummings@kingcounty.gov or call 206-553-3000.
These shelters, like the others in that area of the junction feature historical metal reproductions of the West Seattle Herald front pages from our long history, since 1923 of serving the community.
Original Post 10/2216
Notices have gone up on two of the bus shelters just west of California Ave SW in the West Seattle Junction notifying riders that they will be removed in mid-November for "safety reasons."
