Baby, it’s cold outside. Not only in the real world, but also in the world of “Sex with Strangers” at Burien Actor’s Theatre, which opens on February 10 and runs for four weekends until March 5.
The opening scene of “Sex with Strangers” is reminiscent of a typical dime store romance novel: A down-on-her-luck novelist is curled up inside a rural Michigan bed-and-breakfast reading the manuscript to her latest novel which may or may never be published. All of a sudden Olivia (Alexandra Novotny) hears a car arrive and footsteps trudging through the snow.
When the door opens, she is greeted by Ethan (J. Woody Lotts), a 20-something hipster dude who looks out of place and looking for trouble. After the usual round of awkward introductions, these two strangers realize that they’re not quite strangers after all. Not only do they share a mutual friend, but they learn that they’re both novelists, though their professional trajectories couldn’t be more different.
(Jan. 30, 2017 - Burien, WA) – Passion, ambition and the Internet become inextricably entangled in the thoughtful comedy Sex with Strangers at Burien Actors Theatre. Performances of this Washington State premiere, written by Laura Eason, run Feb. 10 through March 5.
The Burien Actors Theatre production features specialty drinks themed to the show and plenty of free on-site parking, plus an opening night party.
“SEX WITH STRANGERS”
Olivia, an attractive and talented but underappreciated mid-career writer, is unexpectedly trapped in a secluded, snowed-in B&B with Ethan, an equally attractive and wildly successful young blogger. Her latest novel is an unsung masterpiece; his blog of his “sexcapades” is being made into a movie. She prefers books; he prefers eBooks. She is anonymous; he has half a million Twitter followers. Opposites soon attract – passionately – as each realizes they want more of what the other has. But the closer they get, the more they must confront the murky side of ambition, success and the digital era…
This show is suggested for ages 13-plus due to some adult content and language.
Sen. Reuven Carlyle, Rep. Gael Tarleton, and Rep. Noel Frame celebrated the passage of a measure on the floor of the House that will name a new capitol campus building after beloved former 36th District Rep. Helen Sommers.
“It is a profound honor to have directly succeeded Helen’s 36 years of service in Olympia and I could not be more proud of this effort to name a major state government building in recognition of her unparalleled accomplishments in the Legislature,” Sen. Carlyle said.
The new capitol campus building, set to open later this year, is located at 1063 Capitol Way in Olympia. The Washington State Patrol, the Office of Financial Management, and several legislative agencies will move into the building this August.
