SLIDESHOW: Admiral Theater celebrates re-opening with ceremony and classic films

With about 150 people looking on, a ribbon cutting (that was actually film) was held at the now restored Admiral Theater on March 22. Emceed by Clay Eals, Executive Director of the Southwest Seattle Historical Society the event was attended by local leaders, neighbors, friends, and fans of the theater.

The event dubbed “The Ship Sails Again: Four Screens, Four Eras.” featured four programs, each representing a turning point in the theater’s history and featuring films that have played the Admiral or its predecessor, the Portola Theater (which was in the building that is the current theater’s lobby):

ERA ONE, the Portola Theater’s opening in 1919: A slate of classic silent films: Charlie Chaplin’s war parody “Shoulder Arms” (1918), plus three shorts, Harold Lloyd’s “The Marathon” (1919) and Buster Keaton’s “One Week” (1920) and “Cops” (1922). “Shoulder Arms” played the Portola Theater in August 1927.

Amanda's View: Back-breaking, heavy-lifting

By Amanda Knox

I’ve never liked being in a rush. I forget things: my coat, my wallet, my keys. I bump into doors and doorways and stumble over cracked pavement. Or, as was recently the case, I back out of my mom’s driveway and accidentally knock over her mailbox.

Oh, don’t worry—the thing’s a tank. It’s a security box made of seamless steel, including a post sheath. When the back of my Subaru Forrester drove into the mailbox, what gave way was the twelve-inch stretch of exposed 4X4 between the bottom of the sheath and the ground, where the post was secure inside an 80lbs lump of concrete. Chris and I cut the engine, rushed out of the car, and found the mailbox lying in the grass, impermeable, scratch-less even. Meanwhile, there was now a hole in the back of my car, just below the rearview window. A quick Google search on Chris’s phone revealed that the punctured part was called the “garnish,” and replacing it would cost about $500. Ugh.

West Seattle Junction is one step closer to acquiring its own Residential Parking Zone

By Gwen Davis

It ain’t news: parking in Seattle is difficult. Finding street parking in West Seattle can be kinder than in other areas — such as the north end, Capitol Hill and downtown — but as new people continue to move into West Seattle, parking in the area has become increasingly problematic, as well.

Recently, residents in the West Seattle Junction have grown concerned that they won’t be able to park in front of their own homes. The fear has heightened in the wake of the city’s proposed HALA and MHA programs — which will potentially bring hundreds of new housing units to the area. The West Seattle Junction Neighborhood Association (JuNO) created a petition to ask the city to issue the Junction a residential parking zone (RPZ), which would restrict on-street parking except for residents and short-term visitors.

On Monday March 22, Ruth Harper with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) announced at the JuNO meeting, that the Junction has met the initial threshold needed for an RPZ, and the city will proceed with next steps.

Washington State's regional fishery enhancement groups: Making a real difference for salmon (and orcas)

information from the Whale Trail

Salmon, the primary food for our endangered orcas (J, K and L pods), are in trouble. Almost 20 years ago the state of Washington created a network of 14 non-profits to work with local communities on salmon habitat restoration projects in different watersheds.

These Regional Fishery Enhancement Groups have worked since then with private landowners and community partners to identify and implement valuable projects that can help increase the number of salmon returning to Washington state.

The latest report on the state of Washingtons salmon shows that overall the recovery of endangered salmon is mixed and salmon populations in Puget Sound are still declining. It is even more important to support and invest in these efforts to restore habitat.

Jeanette will share what the Regional Fishery Enhancement Groups across the state are doing to make a difference and also about the group in Seattles backyard: the Mid Sound Fishery Enhancement Group and how you can help.

Buy tickets now to reserve your seat. And hurry! This will likely sell out.
