You Are What You Eat: Breakfast in a jar

By Katy G. Wilkens

Breakfast in a jar, tasty wherever you go

It seems I am always late getting off to work. I walk through my garden on all but the rainiest days, and I can get sidetracked picking rhubarb, snacking on blueberries or watching a robin hop through the lettuce. So I need a quick and easy breakfast I can eat at home or take along.

Breakfast in a jar is an excellent solution. I just put a hearty grain in a Mason jar or plastic container, and then add fruit, milk or yogurt along with some nuts. Voila! Breakfast is served.

Most breakfast in a jar recipes use oatmeal, but one of my favorite grains is farro, the ancestor of modern wheat. Unlike oatmeal, it needs to be cooked. I put a batch in my slow cooker the night before and wake up to a hearty whole grain breakfast that I can dish up for a week. The next week I switch to quinoa, couscous, oatmeal or brown rice. I even have a mix of black, brown and red rice that cooks nicely in my rice cooker.

Fake news report on Amanda Knox leads to site being swamped

A fake news report that claimed Amanda Knox had committed suicide and confessed to murder in a note led to a huge surge of traffic to the West Seattle Herald’s website on Monday June 19.

The site, masquerading as CNN in a what appears to be a very sophisticated looking fake put up the post which led to over 300,000 hits on the site, overwhelming it and blocking traffic for several hours on Monday.

Ken Robinson, Managing Editor for the site said,” We’re happy to report that Amanda is alive and well. We’ve reported the site to the CNN Copyright violation’s department and blocked certain
offending IP addresses connected with the surge.”

Amanda herself said via Twitter, “Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated."

A look at the registration on the site shows that it is registered in Singapore to a Daniel Li but this is likely a false identity.

Quick action by Starbucks employee saves a man's life

After a customer collapses on the sidewalk

From a Fire Department news release:

An adult male suffered a catastrophic medical emergency just prior to making entrance to the Starbucks located in the 14800 block of Ambaum Blvd SW.
According to witnesses who called 911 just before 5pm, the gentleman experienced a sudden cardiac event, went unconscious and collapsed on the sidewalk at the entrance to the store.
According to the American Heart Association (AHA) out of the 350,000 out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest events occurring annually, 90% die because they don’t receive immediate CPR from someone on scene. Remarkably, it has been reported that CPR performed in the first few minutes, can double or triple the chance of survival. This was the case in this event.
Due to the fast actions of Natasha Stapp, a Starbucks employee performing citizen CPR, the chain of survival went unbroken. In addition, quick arrival and professional performance by Burien firefighters, King County Medic‐One Paramedics and Tri‐Med Ambulance employees, the Burien community member was resuscitated and transported to Highline hospital where he was reportedly discharged within days with no deficits.
