Growth and growing pains coming to Sea-Tac Airport

By Gwen Davis

Sea-Tac Airport is planing to grow. In an effort to meet future regional demand, the Port of Seattle has come out with the Sea-Tac Airport Master Plan (SAMP), which outlines an extensive growth process. By 2027, Sea-Tac will service 56 million passengers -- up from 45.7 currently. On Thursday evening, the Port held an open house and presentation for community members to review the plan and ask questions.

The meeting --  held at Georgetown campus of South Seattle College -- was the second SAMP community meeting (the first was held in SeaTac). The final community meeting is set for Bellevue on June 20.

GoFundMe page set up and memorial service planned at West Seattle skatepark

Update June 16

A legend in skateboarding,, Mark Hubbard passed away on June 9 prompting a wave of grief and shock in the tightly knit community around skateboarding. A GoFundMe page was set up to ease the financial burden of his loss and was nearly 1/3 of the way to the $100,000 goal. Thrasher Magazine posted a video and comments on it reflect how strongly people felt about his skills as a skateboarder, builder, and skateboard park visionary. A public memorial service is being organized now for June 22, from 2 to 6pm at one of the parks built by his company, the Delridge Skatepark at 414 SW Genesee St, Seattle, WA 98106.

Kizuki Ramen wants to teach you about Sake; Varieties of the Japanese beverage show character and depth

You may have tried the japanese beverage called Sake (Sock-A) before and possibly thought of it as only specialty drink, or a one-off experience. But that's only because it's a beverage with more sophistication and subtlety than a single taste can explain. It's sometimes referred to as "rice wine" but it is not a wine at all. In fact as the people at Kizuki Ramen explained it is more akin to beer. The best varieties are made by first polishing a very special kind of rice called shuzō kōtekimai 酒造好適米 referred to as "pearls of simplicity" although there are more than 80 types of rice used for Sake. Then only three other ingredients are used; Water, Koji (a kind of yeast), and sometimes Brewers Alcohol (added to extract flavors otherwise left behind). The process of polishing to different degrees shapes the flavor from mild to strong and the alcohol content will vary from roughly 12 percent to 17percent.

Last day of school for West Seattle and Sealth High brings pranks and a swim

The last day of high school can mean a lot of things. Freedom, new horizons, goodbyes and celebrations. For students at West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School it meant an early morning dash into the water at Seacrest Park Cove 2, and some pranks at the school June 15.

West Seattle High's Willow Jane Harvey shared a video of the dash of about 17 people brave enough to take the plunge, which like most plunges was mercifully brief. Afterward the group all went to their homes, showered, and regathered at the Chelan Cafe for an informal Senior breakfast.
