June 2019

Richard Oss

Richard "Rick" Oss passed away May 4, 2019 at age 68. Apart from his time in the Army, he was a lifelong West Seattleite. Rick worked at Lucky Grocery while at Sealth HS and UW and continued to work there summers when he became a teacher. After 20+ years as management at Boeing, Rick was blessed to return to teaching, this time with Seattle Public Schools and ultimately to Sealth to teach in Special Education and The Bridge Program. Rick's two passions were teaching and his faith, which he brought into all aspects of his life.

Showbox: Another Blue Moon?

By Jean Godden

You may have thought Seattle's big historic preservation battles were simmering down, but now it appears that the battle over rescuing the 80-year-old Showbox Theater on First Avenue has barely begun.

Last September, a Seattle City Council bill, pushed by vocal musical lovers, voted to extend protection to the Showbox Theater for 10 months. The music venue is endangered by plans to build a 44-story apartment complex. Now councilmembers are moving ahead to extend that temporary protection for another six months.

The Kindness Quotient

By SJ Mackay

Ladies and gentlemen we have an expert in our midst.   Without further adieu, Mr. Ed Swan, a gentleman fascinated with birds and equally enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge.  As a self-described Birder and Naturalist, Ed is every bird’s friend; he’s beyond curious about the interconnectedness between humans and birds within the ecological setting of the Pacific NW.

“I just saw an Osprey,” he said. His eyes wide, looking high above past the thick dark green treetops against a crisp blue morning. “You just missed an Osprey with a large fish in its beak,” he said with sympathy.

The West Seattle ST3 light rail extension project – which has become quite heated in recent months and won’t be in service until an estimated 2030 – has swept the attention and emotion of many West Seattle residents.

Last week, the Seattle Office of Planning and Community Development (OPCD) gave an overview of the West Seattle light rail extension process at the monthly Junction Neighborhood Organization (JuNO) meeting. The event took place at the West Seattle Senior Center.
