South Seattle College celebrates 2019 graduating class 

South Seattle College’s Class of 2019 graduates were honored at the Seattle Colleges Commencement Ceremony on June 14, 2019 at T-Mobile Park.  Over 900 SSC graduates were celebrated, having earned a wide variety of degrees, certificates and diplomas that open doors to future educational and career opportunities.

South Seattle College is part of the Seattle Colleges District which includes Seattle Central College, North Seattle College and the Seattle Vocational Institute.  Students from all four institutions were joined by family, friends and Seattle Colleges faculty and staff for the celebration.

Firefighters extinguish house fire in Ballard neighborhood

 On June 13 around 3:30 p.m., the Fire Alarm Center received a 911 call reporting a basement fire from a single-story house on the 6700 block of 33rd Ave NW. The first arriving engine company reported flames coming from the basement that extended onto an attached deck as well as a detached garage. The fire continued onto the rear ride of the house and up through the attic. 

Crews responded quickly in a coordinated fire attack while simultaneously searching the house for any occupants. All occupants safely evacuated the house with no injuries. The fire was under control within 30 minutes and extinguished within an hour. One firefighter sustained minor injuries during firefighting efforts.

NW Seaport Alliance hosting Terminal 5 construction public meeting June 22

The Port of Seattle, through The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA), a marine cargo partnership between the Port of Seattle and the Port of Tacoma, has approved a project to upgrade Terminal 5 to handle ultra-large container ships with a capacity of up to 18,000 containers.

The Terminal 5 Project will enhance and maintain the competitiveness of the region’s trade gateway and provide economic benefits including jobs, market access for exports grown and made in the region, and imports beneficial to the regional and national economy. Construction is expected to begin in July 2019.

A public meeting on the project which is expected to have substantial impacts on the area is being held June 22 at Jack Block Park.

Members of the Terminal 5 project team will be on hand to discuss the project, including the scope and environmental mitigation measures for noise, traffic, and air emissions.

UPDATE: Assault during 34th District Democrats meeting draws responses from candidates and others

Victim Louis Frillman has released a statement

The 34th District Democrats June 13 meeting was marred by a physical assault on a person in attendance who was a supporter of another candidate for Seattle CIty Council District 1. 

According to witnesses the person attacked was Louis Frillman who was seated when the assault suspect picked up a glass of wine and threw it on them, along with the plastic cup and then hurriedly left the scene. Responses from both candidate Phil Tavel and candidate Brendan Kolding were posted on Facebook.

Police arrest man brandishing sawed off shotgun in West Seattle

Police arrested a man after he displayed a sawed-off shotgun behind an Alaska Junction business late Friday night June 7.

Officers were dispatched to the 4700 block of California Avenue Southwest at 11 PM Friday for a report of a man with a gun.

Officers spoke with the manager of a business who said he exited out the rear of his business and spotted the 48-year-old suspect speaking incoherently about people shooting at him. At one point the suspect mentioned that he had a sandwich, reached into his bag and pulled out a sawed-off shotgun. The manager told the suspect to leave, which he did, then called 911.

Police officers began searching the area and found the suspect a block away. They searched the man and recovered the loaded shotgun. Officers arrested and booked the suspect into King County Jail for unlawful use of a weapon.

Wayman L. Freeman
--January 6, 1939-October 19, 2018

Wayman passed away peacefully on October 19, 2018, surrounded by family. 
 
Born in 1939 in Rome, GA, he made his way to Seattle via the Navy in 1956, where he met and married his wife Marilyn of 42 years, until her passing in 2001. 

He worked as a warehouseman for 36 years, retiring in 1995 to take care of his wife. He loved to sing and play the guitar. He would tease his family and friends, by starting a song, and never EVER finishing it. He also loved camping. He bought a property in Mason County in 1973, where the family still camps 46 years later.
