Arts A Glow will light the Burien night Sept. 7

Annual festival of lights will fill Dottie Harper Park

The forest comes alive with magic! Join us for Arts-A-Glow Festival of Light, when Dottie Harper Park and Community Center Annex Park are transformed by artist installations, magical lighting, and performers. The event takes place from 5pm to 10pm Sept 7.

Thirteen artists installations will grace the grounds of the event and live music will fill the air from multiple points. Food and drink from twelve vendors in food trucks and booths will dot the event.

Noted Orca researcher Erich Hoyt to speak Sept. 19 at Hall at Fauntleroy

Healthy Seas for Whales and Dolphns

Donna Sandstrom of the Whale Trail has announced the return of renowned researcher and conservationist Erich Hoyt, author of the book Orca the Whale Called Killer. His talk will focus on his global work to protect whales and dolphins and how it might be put to good use for the Southern Resident Killer Whales.

When? Thursday September 19 
Doors open at 6p, program at 7p, event ends at 9p. There will be a light reception before the program, book signing and Q/A afterwards.

The Art of Music returns for West Seattle Artwalk Sept. 12

The Art of Music is back for a second performance on September 12 during the West Seattle Artwalk.

The Art of Music is a series of performances by musicians presented by the West Seattle Junction Association (partial funding by: Seattle Office of Arts & Culture) and scheduled to take place on, and complement, Second Thursday Art Walk evenings.

Second early design guidance meeting set for 8 story 76 unit mixed use project on Market Street

A second Early Design Guidance Meeting for project 3032775-EG has been set for Sept 23 for an 8-story, 76-unit apartment building with retail and office at 1740 NW Market Street. Parking for 2 vehicles proposed. The existing building will be demolished.

The meeting will begin at 6:30pm at the Ballard Community Center, 6020 28th Ave NW, Sunset/Captain Ballard Room.

The project is being designed by Bumgardner Architects.

Seattle and King County unveil new authority to unify response systems and services

information from King County

King County Executive Dow Constantine and Seattle Mayor Jenny A. Durkan today transmitted legislation to their respective councils creating the new King County Regional Homelessness Authority to oversee a unified response to homelessness.

Crafted by Executive Constantine and Mayor Durkan, legislation now before the King County Council and Seattle City Council establishes the King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA) to oversee policy, funding, and services for people experiencing homelessness countywide. The legislation includes a proposed Interlocal Agreement (ILA) and a Charter that authorizes the creation of the new Public Development Authority (PDA) to administer and oversee regional homelessness efforts.

Tow truck hijacked in Burien, suspect in custody

The King County Sheriff's office reports that a tow truck was carjacked in Burien along 1st Ave South in the late afternoon on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The suspect was in custody. 

According to the Sheriff's office the incident began at 15700 BLK Ambaum Blvd SW. The suspect stole a tow truck with a vehicle in tow. He then rammed a KCSO Detective vehicle (he was not injured). Police pursued and put out spike strips to disable the tow truck At 19100 BLK 1 AVE S. The driver was arrested. 

1st Ave South was closed as the investigation was taking place.

"Learning to See" book presentation about iconic photographer Dorothea Lange set for Sept. 12

Author Elise Hooper will present "Learning to See"  a novel about Iconic Photographer Dorothea Lange at  'Words Writers & Southwest  Stories' on Sept. 12th, 6PM, at SW Library Branch 9010 35th Ave. S.W. 

Learning to See, A  Novel of Dorothea Lange, the Woman Who Revealed the Real America, is  a book of historical fiction about Dorothea Lange (1895 – 1965), famed for her photos of migrant workers and the poor taken during the years of the Depression.
