2020 is finally here. West Seattle’s Alki Beach is the place. Across from Dukes.
We run into the water at 10:00 am sharp, Wednesday, January 1, 2020. Last year we had about 700 swimmers, up from a handful of swimmers when we started this tradition over 15 years ago. Swimmers should bring a towel, good water shoes and their hopes and dreams for the New Year.
Cain writes:
On December 16, at about 2100, a male drove a van through the front doors of Ross at a high rate of speed. The van struck several people, and a large amount of merchandise, leaving the vehicle about 40 feet into the store. When deputies arrived, there were several people trapped under the vehicle, including just-turned-2-year-old David Chiche.
Dear Editor:
People of all persuasions have different priorities and different tolerances. But for most people… money and power (at least the power of determining your own destiny) are at or near the top of the list. We all would like to have more money, even wealthy people up to a certain point for some, want more. It’s human nature. Altruism, and the softer virtues such as honesty, seem to consistently take a back seat.
So it comes down to what you are willing to tolerate to get, and keep that money or power. The Bible says “the love of money is the root of all evil” which is demonstrably true.
But for a moment, let’s take money out of the equation. Since money and the love of it are often driven by greed and self interest.

'Tis the end of the year and all through the land newspaper editors are assigning reporters to sum up the year. You're already seeing year-enders (or "rear-enders" as we reporters rudely called them). That's why we're faced with the 10 best bites, the dozen top restaurants, the year's choicest reads, the greatest movies and so on, enough to give the reader whiplash.
And, whereas 2019 was a fractious, divisive year, perhaps best forgotten, there were some fine moments and admirable performances, locally as well as nationally. Here, following the pattern of media year-enders are ten year-end diamonds that shine through the dust -- my personal favorites:
One of the heaviest rainfalls in the last two decades led to multiple mudslides blocking Woodmont beach Drive in Des Moines. The slides happened on Friday. 3.25 inches of rain was recorded at SeaTac Airport in the 24 hour period, making it one of the top five heaviest rainfall records.
The road is currently closed.
Crews were on hand to begin the cleanup which was expected to last through most of the day.

Natalie Ann Palady and Jacques Nawar were from two very different worlds but their wounded hearts met in a way that feels both perfect and meant to be.
Natalie is a musician, a singer songwriter whose other career in the dental industry kept her employed between gigs. She was born and raised in Puyallup, WA but throughout her early years found time to travel all around the world. She was good enough to take her music to Nashville where she lived for three years. She worked in dentistry there too but met some famous musicians including Garth Brooks, Miranda Lambert and Jason Aldean.
Jacques Nawar is an award winning and very successful chef. Born in Marseilles, France he trained as a chef in Paris before getting married and moving to the United States and Washington D.C. and eventually to Seattle.
A van that was completely destroyed by fire near 28th NW and NW Market Street in the early morning hours of Dec. 20 drew a big response from firefighters but was much ado about not much. The total assessed loss? $300.
The cause was ruled undetermined due to extent of fire damage. No injuries.
