UPDATE: West Seattle Covid Recovers website is launched to coordinate local assistance efforts

UPDATE March 26

Organizer Phil Tavel shared this update on the new West Seattle/South Park based Covid recovery site that went live just a few days ago.

westseattlecovid.recovers.org has been up and running for a little over 48 hours.  We have had several offers of donations come in - the donations have been for toilet paper, toiletries, and masks.  We have had 5 people make needs requests, including one for a senior who had medical issues and needed food - she was connected with the senior center and their program that they are doing with West 5 to make lunches for people; and we have had a couple of requests for toilet paper - which we were able to fill; and also housing and clothing requests that we have passed on to other providers.

LETTER: Thanks for compiling list of takeout and delivery restaurants

Dear Editor

Aah - what a lovely day for a pandemic. And our peerless leader wants folks back to work.
Those afflicted with the virus will ring a bell while wearing a sign around their necks reading , “Unclean”.    What an utter dolt!
But why I write is to thank you and the staff for publishing the names of restaurants that are serving takeout. Those businesses and their employees are taking a beating and can use all the help they can get.  I urge your readers to patronize their favorite places as before , the food is just as good , only the sit down will be at home.

LETTER: Thanks for the restaurant list

Hi Westside Seattle,

Thank you for the list of local restaurants offering delivery/take-out service in this week’s edition. I cut it out and posted it in the kitchen for easy reference when we’re feeling hungry. I’d love this to be a temporary section of the paper while we’re in lockdown (updated each week), if possible.

Glad the paper is an essential service!

Thanks,

Dana

How SDOT caught the West Seattle bridge deterioration

New web page launched to let you monitor progress of safety updates and repairs

information from Seattle Department of Transportation

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) does not take chances when it comes to public safety.

That’s why, on Monday, March 23, we closed West Seattle High-Rise Bridge to all traffic and are redirecting the traveling public.

During our shared effort to combat the public health crisis caused by COVID-19, it’s especially important we do all that we can to make sure that our first responders, freight delivering critical supplies, and transit have rapid access to and from West Seattle. That’s why we’re redirecting vehicular traffic from the lower bridge and on to alternative routes.

LETTER: An open letter to the people of Washington

These past few weeks have been difficult and emotional for people across our state. Our strength is being tested as we face the biggest public health crisis in more than a century.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the health and economic impacts caused by the spread of COVID-19, but we are inspired by the united show of resiliency and responsibility by our fellow Washingtonians.

That resilience is seen in our state’s doctors, nurses, public health officials, first responders and scientists working around the clock to keep us safe. We also owe a debt of gratitude to the people who work in grocery stores, sanitation, truck drivers and other Washingtonians doing their best to help our state maintain access to essential goods and services.

We also grieve with the families that have lost loved ones and stand alongside Washingtonians battling this virus.

Herbold: West Seattle Bridge closure

Seattle District 1 City Councilmember Lisa Herald shared these insights and question via her email newsletter:

SDOT announced the abrupt closure of the West Seattle Bridge on Monday, March 23rd at 7 p.m., after a bridge inspection showed expanding cracks. SDOT’s notice says “complete closure is required to maintain safety as our top priority.” I received notice of this when the Mayor called me to let me know, three hours before the public announcement.
