SPS Delivering more meals to students; Meal distribution and partnerships grow

information from Seattle Public Schools

Thanks to dedicated staff and growing partnerships, the number of meals served to Seattle Public Schools students and families continues to trend upward during the Covid-19 pandemic school building closure.

Since the first Monday after all SPS school buildings were closed on Thursday, March 12, 2020, the district’s Nutrition Services Department has provided breakfast and lunch five days a week at 26 school-based meal distribution sites.

The number of students has now increased to an approximate average of 6,500 students served daily, which works out to an approximate average of 13,000 meals served daily.

As the numbers have increased, so has the contribution from community partners.

Burglar bested by bottle of brandy

information from Seattle Police Blotter

Officers arrested a urine-soaked suspect on Sunday in West Seattle after he broke into a home, helped himself to a bottle of liquor and passed out in the resident’s bed.

Around 4:30 PM, a resident in the 9000 block of 24th Ave SW returned home and found her house in disarray, as if someone had been moving items around.

She called 911, and officers arrived and heard snoring coming from the bedroom. They entered the room and found the man lying there with his pants down. He was holding his genitals, and he appeared to have urinated all over himself, the bed, and the nearby carpet.

Officers woke the suspect up and took him into custody.

Quick and healthy meals when stuck at home during Covid-19

By Katy G. Wilkens

Getting to the store in the midst of Covid-19 concerns can be stressful. With a little planning you can minimize your trips to the store, maximize the return on your food budget and be sure you are eating healthy.

Forget the frozen dinners. Many healthy foods last a long time, are easy to store and can be made into healthy meals. Canned vegetables or fish can be rinsed to remove the salt. Frozen veggies without sauces are usually low in sodium, and frozen fruits and veggies are good sources of vitamins.
