Notice that a local bus stop has closed? Blame the pandemic
If you have been out in the community you may have noticed that a local bus stop has been closed. We inquired with King County Metro's Chris Arkills and he offered an explanation for the closures of two that run through Gatewood.
"The Route 22 and 37 are both part of a family of routes that have been suspended during COVID. Many of these routes only run during commuter hours or intermittently during the day. Many of these routes see very low ridership outside of commute hours
Given Metro's challenges with our workforce and financing during the pandemic, we were forced to suspend some routes. Route 37 riders still have access to the 50 and the Water Taxi shuttle for parts of that route. Route 22 riders have access to the 21, 21X, and C Line for much of that route. It is unfortunate, but we need to focus on moving the most people with the resources and workforce we have right now. As we emerge from the pandemic, it is likely they will be restored."

UPDATE: Bearings on 1st Ave South bridge need replacement; Overnight closures start next month as work begins
The Washington State Department of Transportation has announced that work to replace and repair the bridge bearings on the 1st Ave South Bridge will begin in February but the exact date is not yet certain. They posted the news on their blog:
"The current estimate is early February; once we have a specific date we'll share it on our website and Twitter.
Massana Construction Inc. of Gig Harbor had the lowest bid among the five contractors who submitted proposals. Their bid of roughly $380,000 was actually about 18 percent below our engineer's estimate. The savings will be available for us to use on other projects.
With the West Seattle Bridge closed, we understand how important the SR 99 Duwamish River Bridge is to people who travel to or from West Seattle. We are working closely with the Seattle Department of Transportation as we plan for and schedule repairs.
LETTER: Working together
To the Editor:
A light bulb just went off in my dim head!
Since we are inundated with conflicting information, and wild conspiracy theories, and resulting violence and paranoia every day, ie. FOX vs CNN, and Crazy vs Sane, and Trumpers vs Thinkers, etc. why don't 'We The People' set up a Bi-Partisan Bureau Of Correct Information that both sides could buy into and believe? Ted Cruz and Sean Hannity could chair one side and Anderson Cooper and Cory Booker could chair the other side and they would be mandated to work together and come out with factual information, researched, debunked, and agreed to by both sides, and released to the public as 'the truth'?
Sort of a political and societal SNOPES?
It's so crazy it just might work!

SDOT will be drilling under the Duwamish to move communications cables
The Seattle Department of Transportation is preparing to drill a hole horizontally under the Duwamish River to enable the installation of a telecommunications conduit. The project is being done said SDOT because the existing systems need an upgrade to prepare for the future and to "remove long term interdependencies between the Spokane Street Swing Bridge and the future bridge repair work."
The project is set to start in June 2021 and be completed by September.
