Astra Lumina light display experience coming to West Seattle Dec. 9

An illuminated night walk along a nature path branded as Astra Lumina Seattle is coming to West Seattle on Dec. 9. It will be presented along a one mile long path set in the Seattle Chinese Garden just north of the South Seattle College campus.

Visitors, the event's website states, will embark "on a journey to discover the wonder of visiting stars. Through the magic of projections, lighting, and music, astral energy transforms the garden into a celestial pathway, connecting visitors to the stars and the vast world around them."

It's already been presented in other cities such as New York and Los Angeles and Gatlinburg, Tennesee. This will be it's first presentation in Seattle.

Two attempted car jackings in West Seattle reported on Tuesday

Two attempted car jackings that began with staged accidents happened on Tuesday just minutes apart in West Seattle. The same white four door Lexus was reported by victims. The tactic used was the same too. The Lexus struck both victims cars from behind then, when they stopped to look at the damage, they were rushed by the perpetrators guns in hand to take their possessions and steal their cars.

The first was staged at Southwest Spokane Street and Harbor Avenue, the second happened at Harbor Avenue Southwest and California Way Southwest near Seacrest Park.

The two victims were able to drive away, managing to avert being carjacked. Others in the greater Seattle area have not been so aware or fortunate. Multiple reports have come in over the summer of this same tactic resulting the cars being stolen.

Seattle City Council votes to adopt new public drug use law

The Seattle City Council on Tuesday vote to adopt a version of Washington State’s laws on public drug use. It adds the crimes of knowing possession of a controlled substance and use of a controlled substance in a public place.

Most communities in the state have conformed to new laws on controlled substances passing into law last May. The state laws make public drug use and possession a gross misdemeanor, allowing city attorneys to prosecute the drug charges.

Mayor Bruce Harrell released the following statement:

“Today’s vote by the City Council is a needed step forward in our efforts to address the deadly epidemic of fentanyl and other synthetic drugs. Fentanyl is tragically killing thousands in our city and around the country, and we need urgency and innovative solutions to make change.

Water taxi will continue midday service through the winter

A bit of good news for King County Water Taxi commuters.

The taxi will maintain midday and weekend service through the winter.

Prior to 2021, during the fall and winter, the water taxi reduced service, sailing only during commute hours with no midday service. In September 2021, during the repair of the West Seattle High Bridge, the water taxi started a pilot program funded by the Seattle Department of Transportation that provided midday sailings, offering a transportation choice for those wanting to avoid the construction detours driving to and from West Seattle.

In 2022, the water taxi continued the pilot, and the ridership levels were enough to recommend maintaining the winter sailings, funded by the King County Marine Division, as a permanent part of the schedule.
