Pat's View: Hussein changed the way I feel about food

By Patrick Robinson

When I met Hussein Khazaal I was immediately struck by his smile. It was knowing, but innocent, born of experience but as fresh as a flower. Every time I met him after that he had that rare gift of renewing it in the moment he shared it with me.

I was doing a story about his new restaurant, The Phoenecia which was in the middle of the block on California Ave in West Seattle in 1975. The restaurant had a skylight with a stained glass applique made of plastic over it but the effect still worked. This was something different in Seattle’s birthplace.

Even then we had burgers and pizza. Fried chicken and diner food. If you are old enough you’ll remember Herfy’s, and Joe Banana’s, Chicken Delight, and Nobby’s.

The West Seattle McDonald’s location south of the Morgan Junction will reopen on December 12!” according to owner Alia Abboud.

She said in an email that “The store will open from 7 am to 8 pm and will be Drive-Thru only to allow the employees to learn the new side-by-side drive-thru and get fully comfortable with the new operations and communications system.

As we move forward, we will extend our hours as we gain staffing levels to provide the best possible service to our community, to include opening the lobby for dine-in customers. We are very excited to once again be open to serve our many wonderful customers in the West Seattle neighborhood!”

West Seattle Junction Hometown Holidays was cool and wet and fun

The West Seattle Junction Hometown Holidays event and GLOWS was only held back a little by persistent rain and temperatures in the 30's.

It didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the Endolyne Children's Choir or of the West Seattle School of Rock who both performed early in the evening.
