HERBOLD: SDOT announcement on Alki Stay Healthy Street

Last Friday SDOT announced updates on Healthy Streets, including the Alki Point.

SDOT shared early design concepts in 2022 and evaluated community feedback in 2023. Updates include approximately 0.25 miles of new walking/biking space; 3 new ADA parking spaces; 3 new speed humps; and on-street parking removal to allow for new walking/biking space.

Construction is expected to begin next year.

Astra Lumina is an artful night walk that feels like a science fiction film

Imagine being set loose on another world where artists are in charge and the stories they tell are communicated in a language of light and sound.

That's the feeling you get walking through Astra Lumina, an immersive night walk experience now installed at the Seattle Chinese Garden just north of South Seattle College.

Moment Factory a Canadian entertainment company in collaboration with Fever, a live event presentation company designed, built, and presented this experience, using lights, lasers, music, sound, and special effects.

The media and special guests were invited to a preview event on Dec. 8 where the company and others spoke.

SW Seattle Youth Alliance sponsoring FREE Skate night Dec.21

The Southwest Seattle Youth Alliance in partnership with many SW Seattle and White Center organizations will be hosting Winter Roller Skating night December 21st from 5-8pm at Southgate Roller Rink 8648 17th Ave SW in White Center.

SDCI responds to report charging tree code violations

The Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) responded to a report by West Seattle Urban Conservation and Wildlife Biologist/Specialist Kersti Muul and volunteers from Tree Action Seattle, Westside Seattle published about here.

The report charged SDCI with "ignoring, or facilitating tree code violations" resulting, "in the removal and destruction of numerous trees and groves." The report further states that in a report by "Seattle City Auditor, reveals systemic nepotism, questionable ethics and conflicts of interest within SDCI.  and that  "the agency has a direct conflict of interest with tree preservation." It further called, "for the creation of an independent urban forestry division within a new Department of Climate and the Environment."

Alpine Diner and Bar and Big Mario's Pizza open in White Center

Opening Dec. 7 at 9635 16th Ave SW in White Center are two new restaurants. The Alpine Diner and Bar will be sharing space with Big Mario's Pizza.

The Alpine Diner will offer a full food & beverage menu of classic diner food available daily from 7 AM to 10 PM in what they say is a ski lodge inspired interior. The have a game room, a fireplace and small bar. It has a large outdoor patio with bocci ball and outdoor seating,

It is the sister restaurant to the Lost Lake Café.

Canna Culture Shop victim of smash and grab burglary

#2023-347453/Southwest Precinct/Third Watch:

On Sunday 12-3-2023, at 2:51 am, patrol responded to a report of a burglary in the 5400 block of California Avenue Southwest. The Canna Culture Shop was the victim of of smash and grab burglary. Police were advised that a silver KIA struck a building and occupants left in an unknown black sedan.

Upon arrival, officers found an unreported stolen (silver KIA) had been used to ram through the front of the business, causing significant damage. Suspects stole unknown property before leaving. The suspects and or suspect vehicle were not located at the time of the incident. 

Canna was the scene of a previous smash and grab in September.
