Mayor Bruce Harrell recently introduced his Seattle One plan that calls for changes in zoning, height restrictions, density and more. Councilmember Rob Saka shared his explanation of the potential impacts within District 1 with his constituents in his weekly newsletter.

The above map shows the approximate area of District 1 and preliminary, proposed new zoning areas with descriptions below.   

To understand what type of density is proposed for each of the new zoning areas, please refer to the Plan starting on Growth Strategy, page 14.

City of Burien files lawsuit against King County for breach of interlocal agreement

Information from the City of Burien

The City of Burien has filed a lawsuit against King County and the King County Sheriff's Office for refusing to enforce any portion of Burien Municipal Code 9.85.150 and refusing to comply with the Interlocal Agreement's dispute resolution process that every contract city agrees to with King County.

In breaching the Interlocal Agreement, King County has placed its judgment over that of Burien's duly elected officials; denied the City of Burien its authority to assist and protect Burien residents, businesses, and property; prevented Burien's City Manager from providing direction to the contract police as stated in the Interlocal Agreement; and interfered with Burien's effort to provide guidance for the unhoused within the city’s boundaries.

The lawsuit is filed in the Superior Court of Washington for Snohomish County (case # 24-2-02338-31).

West Seattle Senior Center seeking artist to paint an outdoor mural

The West Seattle Senior Center is going through a renaming and rebranding this year. In mid-May, the nonprofit will announce to the community its new name. 

As part of that, the organization is seeking a vibrant and meaningful professional mural to express its new name and brand that will enhance the visual appeal of the center, create a welcoming atmosphere and reflect the spirit of the community.

Open Letter: Sound Transit is preventing Seattle from achieving its Comp Plan tree canopy goal

Greetings Mayor and Council Members,

Downtown job growth, not population density, drives transit growth. The jobs-transit ridership correlation coefficient for the top 50 urban areas is 0.7; for urban population density — 0.4.  Density increases in most urban areas had little or no effect transit ridership.  Seattle, the one urban area that increased downtown jobs, mostly thanks to Amazon, increased its transit ridership.  And buses, not light rail, carried most of those passengers. 

As centers of employment diversify from downtown, Amazon reduces its presence, and hybrid and work from home structures increase, ridership on buses and light rail is decreasing.  In fact, Sound Transit has reduced its Ballard-West Seattle ridership predictions for 2042 to the same as what buses carry now — about 27,000 riders per day.

On Monday, 25 March 2024, Sound Transit staff, staff of Sound Transit Board members, local elected officials, representatives from Seattle’s Department of Transportation and Office of Economic Development, and local business owners met in the Youngstown /North Delridge neighborhood to discuss the West Seattle Link Extension project and its impacts to businesses, organizations, and community resources in the vicinity of Delridge station as proposed in the preferred alignment (DEL-6).

All Hands cleanup effort in White Center set for Sat. March 30

Join us for Seattle Adopt a Street's 2024 All Hands Neighborhood Cleanup Series! We're sprucing up 5 Seattle neighborhoods with 10 community cleanups from March to October, focusing on removing litter and graffiti.

Kick off the inaugural cleanup season on Saturday, March 30 in White Center.

We’ll meet outside of Fresh Flours and send teams out in all directions to beautify our streets, remove litter, scrub away graffiti and build community together.

The series will then continue with cleanups in the neighborhood communities of Othello, Mount Baker, Bitter Lake and the Central District. No RSVP required, just show up and pitch in.We look forward to seeing you out there!

Sealth PTSA sponsoring Community Safety Forum April 16

In the wake of two fatal shooting deaths in the past year near Chief Sealth International High School (CSIHS) the PTSA is sponsoring a Community Health Forum Tuesday evening, April 16 at 6:30pm.

The meeting will feature members of Seattle Public Schools, Seattle City Council, Seattle Police Department, and Seattle Parks and Rec. A Q & A will be included.

The school is located at 2600 SW Thistle Street.
