2024: The year in photos

Over the course of the year many events transpire some tragic, some sad, some just a moment to be recalled. This is by no means a comprehensive review of everything that took place. It's more meant for you to pause then put these moments in context.

In that spirit we share here, some photos from 2024.

A tree estimated to be as tall as 120 feet fell amid wind and rain around 3:25pm on Saturday Dec. 28 near White Center. The tree did some damage to one home but did not bring down any wires as it fell, blocking SW Barton Street near 22nd Ave SW.

Seattle Police responded to the scene but due to the holiday weekend a crew to remove the tree was not immediately available. It was expected to get removed, according to neighbors sometime on Sunday.

Living in Your Body, But Better!

How embodiment heals mind, body, and spirit

By Beth Dayo

Do you have a scar? Does the skin feel thicker, look different, feel less sensitive or just different? Trauma has this same effect beneath the surface. The word trauma’s origins are Greek and literally mean wound. The problem with a trauma wound is we can’t bandage or cast it in order for it to heal properly. Left unaddressed, the "scar tissue" from trauma manifests in chronic physical tension, lack of mobility, and dull or exaggerated sensation.

Pecos Pit BBQ closes locations; Stay tuned for updates

Pecos Pit BBQ, which was originally founded in 1980 by Ron and Debra Wise and developed a cult like following has closed. It was purchased by Gerry Kingen in 2015 with a plan to develop the brand into a chain, just as he did with the Red Robin gourmet burger restaurants in the 1970's.

The West Seattle location at the corner of 35th SW and Fauntleroy Way SW was the last of the chain to close on Dec. 22 following the closure of the Yelm location last fall and Pike's Pit in the Pike Place Market on Oct. 19.

They released a statement that reads:

"With heavy hearts, we're announcing that Pecos Pit BBQ is closing its 1st Avenue and West Seattle locations. Over the last few years, these Pecos operations have been negatively impacted by COVID shutdowns, the closure of the West Seattle bridge, inflation, fast rising food and labor costs as well as theft and property damages.

New Year's day Alki Polar Bear Swim is back for 2025

Organizer Mark Ufkes has announced the return of the annual Alki Beach Polar Bear Swim for 2025.

The event in recent years has seen a growing crowd with well over 2000 rushing into the water, normally around 46 degrees in winter. Often a portable sauna is on hand, for a fee of course.

We go into the water at 10:00 am sharp; after a group countdown from 10, 9, 8, . . .  There will be a huge crowd (well over 1,000 last year), so plan accordingly.  Line up and down the beach.  Spread out.  Holding hands with someone you love makes going into the water much easier.  Trust me on this.   Once the countdown begins, get ready to run.  And keep your kids close.
