Pat's View: A world without consequences? Why we lie, cheat, and break the rules

It seems like every day brings news of another scandal: politicians bending the truth, corporations cutting corners, individuals behaving badly. Why do people act this way, seemingly without regard for the rules or the impact of their actions? While there are many factors at play, a significant contributor is the perception, or in some cases the reality, of a lack of consequences for wrongdoing.

One key reason people lie is to avoid punishment. Whether it's a child hiding a broken toy or an adult fudging numbers on a tax return, the motivation is the same: to escape negative repercussions. This desire to avoid punishment is so powerful that it even drives people to lie to protect others. Think of the coworker who covers for a friend's mistake or the parent who takes the blame for their child's misbehavior.

4th Annual Gingerbread Stomp promises cookie carnage Dec.15

This Sunday, the iconic Lariat Bar at 9827 16th SW in White Center will transform into a sweet battleground for the 4th annual Gingerbread Stomp. And no, this isn’t your grandma’s cookie bake-off – it’s a cookie construction carnage! All proceeds this year will support Stephanie’s Lifeline, proving that even gingerbread destruction can have a heart of gold.

For a mere $20, participants receive a gingerbread house kit, and have a few hours to channel their inner architects. But beware! Only the strongest, sturdiest sugar shacks will survive. At the end of the building blitz, everyone will vote on their top three houses, with votes being tallied in what promises to be the most delicious election since Hansel and Gretel voted themselves out of the witch’s oven.

Seattle Public Schools issues an apology for violating First Amendment rights

On Wednesday Dec. 11 a peaceful protest was planned by Chief Sealth International senior girls basketball player Fahima Mohamed. That protest meant she would sit out the game, and then read a statement to draw attention to the recent gun violence in West Seattle that claimed the lives of two 15 year old Sealth students, Sudayis Ida and Mobarak Adam.

In attempting to enter the gymnasium to cover the story, both Westside Seattle and Q13Fox News were barred from entry by order of Sealth Principal Ray Garcia-Morales. Asked to leave the campus despite the public being allowed to attend the game and even photograph and take video of the actions and words of Fahima Mohamed, both media outlets were denied their First Amendment rights.

Alki Cafe closed, owners evicted

The Alki Beach Cafe, under what was said to be new ownership as recently as last August, is closed with eviction notices posted in the front window. The notice is from the King County Sheriff stating that it is a criminal trespass to enter the building.

Westside Seattle covered the business transition to Paul Sandoval who took over the management of the business which has been a part of the Alki community for nearly thirty years.

But rumors on social media and some background information shared with WestsideSeattle indicated that the transition was not what it was purported to be, with the former owner retaining control, according to former employees.

We are seeking more information and will update if it becomes available.

The recent shooting death of a 15 year old Sudayis Ida in High Point seemed to slip off the public radar as just another tragedy with no answers. But that did not sit right with Fahima Mohamed.

Mohamed is a star basketball player for Chief Sealth and she is the reigning defensive player of the year, metro league mvp, team captain and a 4.4 GPA.

She’s close to reaching a scoring record of 1000 points in fact and her achievements mean she has the noteriety to bring attention to the issue of gun violence. The death of another 15 year old  Mobarak Adam at the Southwest Athletic Complex 11 months ago and Ka'Don Brown whose body was found on the Sealth International High School campus in April 2023.
