Schools affected by snow, garbage collection too

Seattle Solid Waste shared this notice to customers regarding the winter weather:

Due to winter weather conditions, there will be no residential garbage, recycling, or food/yard waste pickup in Seattle today, Wednesday, February 5, 2025. SPU’s North and South transfer stations will open at 10 a.m. today.

Weather and road conditions permitting, garbage, recycling, and food/yard waste service will resume Thursday, February 6 weather permitting, on a revised schedule — with customers scheduled for pickup today, Wednesday, February 5, collected tomorrow. Belated blaze on the beach says final farewell to last year

The annual Christmas Tree burn on Alki finally took place on February 1 after a delay prompted out of respect for the lives and property lost in the California wildfires.

The blaze took place in the 2600 block of Alki Ave SW and given the delay necessarily featured fewer trees. An estimated 50 trees met their fiery fate.

50 to 60 people took part in the event  and the Seattle Fire Department did show up for safety reasons keeping their distance.

Washington State Black Legacy Institute celebrates a grand opening

The Washington State Black Legacy Institute (WSBLI) celebrated its grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a significant milestone for the community. The event, held on February 1st, also recognized as Washington State Black Legacy Institute Day, drew a crowd of supporters, partners, and community members. Despite a slight timing issue due to the Pacific Northwest’s somewhat unpredictable weather (it snowed during the event), the atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation for the Institute's future.
