Trinkets & Treasures: Making the most of estate sales

When was the last time you went on a treasure hunt or took a trip down memory lane?
Welcome to the magical word of estate sales -- the perfect place to dig up some nostalgia and go home with a prize find or two. Uncover all the “goods” -- from the polished deco masterpiece to the dusty Cabbage Patch doll, perched in a box filled with Legos, silver spoons, mothballs and a handful of sewing patterns from the 40’s.
That’s right, if you are looking to create a one-of-a-kind shopping experience, one that will have you bursting with stories, sights and smells that can take you back to that “one moment in time,” I invite you to hit up a local estate sale.
Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your journey:
1. Download your local estate sale app. I use EstateSales.net. You simply plug in your zip code, and Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo you are directed to your next neighborhood shopping experience.
2. Bring cash. Some sales accept cards, however you wouldn’t want to pass up any one-in-a-million items simply because it’s a cash-only event, would you? Less is not more in this case, my friends. I suggest bringing the amount of money you are willing to spend for the day. Believe me, it will save you making trips to the ATM -- or losing out on your amazing find.
3. Bring bags. Not all estate sales will allow you to take them inside. However, they might come in handy, even if you have to walk back to your car prior to checking out. Having a few bags could keep you from dropping a handful of costume jewels or a pile of books.
4. Show up early. Sign-in sheets are posted on the door and the first 16 people (give or take) will be ushered in first. The earlier the better! You can always cozy up to a cup of coffee in your car while you wait.
See you at the next sale!
