A fire that apparently began in shrubbery just outside the apartments at 7100 Calfornia Ave SW, on the 4th of July at around 6:10pm quickly jumped to a nearby tree and the apartments as well. Calls from passersby to any potential residents were not answered.
The fire damaged all four floors of the building as it swept up the face of the building, There was some potential danger from BBQ's on the decks of the apartments but Fire crews arrived within roughly two minutes and quickly knocked down the flames.
Fireworks was determined to be the cause and the blaze did $100,000 damage according to the Seattle Fire Department.
I would guess that the $100,000 estimate may be quite low compared to what it will really cost the building owner and possibly any contents damage to the tenants. Truly wish fireworks weren't even sold any longer because there is no method to truly regulate their use in areas in which they're outlawed - like incorporated Seattle.
I know they should ban fireworks. I was a victim of this fire so was my families and neighbors. Now we homeless and staying in motels. But glad my 10yr old son and dog got out safe in seconds and my neighbors.
My unit was the very bottom so it’s badly damaged inside. Was stress of the Covid 19 going on and now homelessness so it’s becoming a big impact on my son who can’t even go school or be around friends of the virus and now he has to stay in motels. But what’s done is done we just have to keep going on?
I am so happy to hear everyone got out safe including pets , it could’ve been so much worse. So sorry for everyone this affects. Great job fire Dept and first responders
And yet another reason that people need to STOP buying fireworks and START obeying the laws. This whole tragedy could've been avoided.
