Fireworks are banned in Seattle, but this is the last year in King County
Sun, 07/04/2021
The City of Seattle passed a ban on fireworks inside City limits that is now the law. But that doesn't mean anything goes. In fact many of the fireworks commonly seen in unincorporated King County are in fact illegal.
To clarify here's what the Seattle Police Department says about fireworks in Seattle.
"The possession, manufacture, storage, sale and use of fireworks (meaning everything but pop-it caps) is prohibited in Seattle, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $5,000 fine.
911 call centers are typically inundated on the 4th with reports of fireworks-related injuries and house fires.
Because of that influx of calls, please only use 911 to report life-threatening emergencies. We are also unable to respond to fireworks complaints (or any other crime reports, for that matter) sent via Twitter.
While the Seattle Police Department values every call from neighbors about concerns in their communities, the Fourth has typically been a loud and busy day for police and firefighters, and frequent fireworks noise complaints make it more difficult for 911 operators, police, and fire officials to respond to life-threatening emergencies across the city.
DO CALL 911: to report fires, injuries, crimes, or any other life-threatening incidents.
DO NOT CALL 911: to complain about noise from fireworks.
If you do have concerns about fireworks in your neighborhood, but nothing has been damaged and no one has been injured, you can still call the Seattle Police non-emergency number at (206) 625-5011."
In King County authorities are saying this:
"If it has a stick or fins and it goes up, or if it explodes, it is illegal in Washington State. Fireworks are not allowed in King County Parks, per King County Code. Fireworks may be discharged only on July 4 from 9 a.m. to midnight. Fireworks sales are allowed 9 a.m.-11 p.m., through July 4.
A Stage 1 burn ban is already in effect for unincorporated King County, and this Fourth of July holiday will mark the last time residents will be allowed to discharge consumer fireworks in the unincorporated areas. Fireworks sales and use will be banned in unincorporated King County beginning in 2022.
The Executive has reviewed the fire danger status with the Fire Marshal. Temperatures have moderated and with the current weather outlook, an emergency fireworks ban is not anticipated for unincorporated King County.
Still, given the record heat in the region this last week, the county urges residents and visitors to the unincorporated areas to not discharge any fireworks. We recommend attending one of the public firework displays scheduled in the area. If residents do discharge consumer fireworks, they must exercise extreme caution.
“While we want everyone to enjoy their Fourth of July holiday, the safest bet this year is to avoid lighting them altogether,” Ricketts says. “Conditions are extremely dry given the recent extreme heat wave. If you do light fireworks, people must be aware of their surroundings and potential dangers.”
Ricketts strongly urges against using consumer fireworks and offered a few instructions to legally and safely do so:
- Fireworks are banned in many King County cities (check with your local jurisdiction)
- Fireworks purchased from approved firework stands can only be discharged in unincorporated King County on July 4, and they must be sold by Washington State licensed retailers at approved permitted stands.
- Fireworks not purchased from a state-licensed, fireworks retailor cannot legally be discharged in unincorporated King County. They may be considered explosive material.
- If it has a stick or fins and it goes up, or if it explodes, it is illegal in Washington State.
- Fireworks are not allowed in King County Parks, per King County Code.
- Fireworks may be discharged only on July 4 from 9 a.m. to midnight.
- Fireworks sales are allowed 9 a.m.-11 p.m., through July 4. You must be at least 16 years old, with photo identification, to purchase fireworks.
- If you choose to buy and discharge fireworks, follow these safety tips:
- Always have a responsible adult light all fireworks.
- Use eye protection.
- Have a charged garden hose or a fire extinguisher handy.
- Use fireworks outdoors only—away from buildings, houses with wood exteriors, trees, and dry fields.
- Avoid aerial fireworks.
- Light one item at a time, move away quickly, and have everyone keep a safe distance.
- If a device does not light or fire, an adult should wait at least five minutes before approaching it.
- Clean up all debris and soak used fireworks in water before disposing of them.
- Keep pets safe (Regional Animal Services of King County provides information about fireworks safety for pets).
To report illegal fireworks usage or potential danger, residents can contact the 24-hour non-emergency line from the King County Sheriff’s Office at 206-296-3311. If you need immediate help from the police, medics or fire department always call 9-1-1."

It's time to document these…
It's time to document these people and have them fined after the fact. Ban fireworks for consumer use nationally.
Last night was the first…
Last night was the first time in 20 years, Benefit Playground / Park was not a fireworks launch area ! Kudos to the Seattle Police & Fire Departments for a year of relative peace & quiet !
It's time to ban fireworks…
It's time to ban fireworks lol. You people are brainwashed! How about we just lock everything down again, take everyones rights and freedoms away and become a communist county like China? We have truly become a nation of crybabies! It's no wonder this country is so screwed up!

maybe when possible use the rat on a rat --if you see someone, report it and get a reward
We purchased fireworks in…
We purchased fireworks in Woodinville at a stand in front of a Safeway store. I didn't realized they were illegal - next time I'll ask the operators, before purchasing, on the legality of their stand and where in Woodinville we can light them.
The 4th of July is about…
The 4th of July is about remembering the sacrifices people made to ensure our freedoms. The 4th of July is just one day. We should be willing to sacrifice some peace and quiet for one day so those who enjoy fireworks can use them. Now we should not have to sacrifice property damage or bodily injury from fireworks and thus anyone who doesn't use them responsibily should be punished severely for any harm they bring upon others by using them. Other than that, it's just one day....take a vacation out of the country or take a hike into the mountains if you still can't handle them for the one night. INTOLERANCE FUELS RESENTMENT AND EVENTUALLY THE OUTCOME WILL BE FAR WORSE THAN ANYTHING FIREWORKS COULD DO ON ONE NIGHT A YEAR.
Can't ban tribes from…
Can't ban tribes from selling fireworks, they are sovereign nations unto themselves. Personally, I love em so I'm thankful their availability will remain in place.
Jenni, I must have misread…
Jenni, I must have misread the part of the constitution that guarantees your right to have fireworks. because I don't recall which amendment that is.
4th July and New Years Eve are by far and away my least favorite days of the year. Our dogs are heavily sedated but still highly agitated. Out here in unincorporated King County it sounded like a war zone last night, including heavy artillery that literally shakes the ground. It was non-stop explosions from about 9:30 last night until about midnight. And then the special neighbor who set off his 30 minute high power highly explosive display at 1am, right after we finally got the dogs settled and started dozing off ourselves.
I don't deny you the ability to pursue happiness. But fireworks freaks are destroying mine. I can't wait until next year when at least it will be illegal (not that that will stop most of the people around here)
Tribal fireworks sales don't…
Tribal fireworks sales don't need to be banned
Only two things would need to happen.
1. Pull people over upon leaving the reservation in the days leading up to the 4th and with a warrant, open their trunk Arrest and fine them, put it on camera and distribute widely. It will be illegal to possess them after all. Easy.
2. Pass laws that put pressure on the tribes to limit the kind and size of fireworks sold. They make most of their money through the operation of their casinos. But they exist under an agreement with the U.S. Government and the State. Pressure applied where they get their money would cause them to respond rather quickly.
This wonderful day that you…
This wonderful day that you un American curmudgeons lament so fiercely, thankfully comes to every city in America. Seattle and it’s surrounding cities are more likely to take advantage of the many Tribal firework offerings resulting in a more difficult to police situation (the majority of it’s citizens seem to ACTUALLY enjoy it quite a lot) I personally think people like the ones complaining here would do well to vacate the city while we celebrate our Independence Day and maybe consider an extended stay. May I suggest Antarctica? Happy Fourth of July!!!
People just need to be more…
People just need to be more responsible with fireworks PERIOD! Stop the cancel culture mentality. We dont need government telling us what to do anymore, that's what freedom is after all!
In my neighborhood, it…
In my neighborhood, it started at on Juneteenth, happening a bit every night after. Then the night of the third it got worse, going well past midnight. Then one woke me up on the fourth at 6:00am. Through the day, the majority started around 4:00pm and went until 3:00-4:00am. The night of the fifth, it started around 9:00pm and is still going. If you’re tired of reading that rundown, imagine how I feel. Excited to wake up for work tomorrow morning—if I ever get to sleep. If you think living in a warzone is what freedom is all about, then move to Syria or Afghanistan. This certainly isn’t freedom to me.
Nanny state banning…
Nanny state banning everything it can think of. Pathetic.
You know what's disgusting?…
You know what's disgusting? So called "freedom lovers' who make threats on the internet about things that will be "so much worse" if folks dont accept every bit of nonsense they want because "freedom."
I'm free not to have my house burnt down or PTSD aggrevated. If I'm supposed to go somewhere else while you light them on a city block, where you literally cant control outcomes even though you're stupid enough to think you can, why arent you supposed to/cant go to a desginated area to have your fun intelligently?
Your b.s. also breeds resentment. It's time you stop thinking in terms of left/right and folks left of you as soft. I'm dead-center middle and if they let me stop you from doing what's already illegal and harmful myself when you do it near me as self-defense, I 1000% would.
Resentment...give me a break. If you cant see why taking care of your neighbors matters more than having fun wherever you want, you're an a-hole child who cant turn the TV down when his sick brother is sleeping disguised as an American
More freedoms lost. Thank…
More freedoms lost.
Thank youKing County leftists😢
Isn't the best way to truly ban the use of fireworks to ban the sale of fireworks? Would not such a regulation makeup it far easier for the police to find those using illegal fireworks as well?
