The 1930's era stone cottage, around which a full fundraising campaign was forged finally moved. First delayed by the city for months for the permit, then on the evening of the move the process itself, carried out by the Nickel Bros. was plagued by fits and starts.
The stone cottage had been in prep state for months and was wrapped, secured and up on wood risers just waiting. Two sets of independent groups of wheels were put under the house earlier in the day. Then the the two steel I-beams that were previously attached to the house, had a third one added cross wise. That beam called a bunk had a hole and a large steel pin would be dropped through it and into the corresponding hole on the back of a large Semi Flatbed from Nickel Bros.
But getting the house out and around a telephone pole proved tricky as did clearing a wire, With those two problems solved then it became necessary to turn the truck around and then straighten out the house. Nickel Bros "Gypsy Joe" was at the wheel but it appeared as if hydraulic issues were causing problems and moving back and forth slowly they got it turned around. Then it was obvious they had mis calculated. The trailer they had towed in with the large truck full of wood beams was then in the way and had to be unloaded at least partially to allow clearance for the house.
The move was supposed to begin at 11pm and finish at 2am. By 4 am they were underway but still not to the destination for the cottage, a Port of Seattle parking lot where it will be stored until a final determination on its fate can be made.
It finally arrived, after sunrise and was left on the truck.
Crews came to the site in the early morning hours to take down "the pink house" next to the stone cottage and begin clearing the site. The site is set to be home to a 6-story, 18-unit apartment building. Parking for 27 vehicles proposed.
What a wonderful project the group established and accomplished,
