TUKWILA - Strength of numbers and experience prevailed in a 7-0 Foster High School home court boys tennis Seamount League win against Renton on Friday, Sept. 14.
Foster's Bulldogs strengthened their league record to 2-2 and overall record to 2-3. Renton's Indians fell to 0-3 and 2-3, respectively.
"Renton is a young team, but they gave a great effort," said Bulldog head coach Sopheak Ngeth. "I told our players to work on their own weaknesses."
In this boys season, the four singles and three doubles format favors squads that have depth in numbers of rostered players.
For the invading Indians, this format resulted in the default of the trio of doubles matches due to insufficient numbers to field teams.
Foster is also waiting for eligible players, but coach Ngeth expects his team to compete well.
"We're looking to get all our varsity players together," continued Ngeth. "There is a good mix of the older players and really younger ones. In this mix there is also a combination of experience and first-time players, we're trying to take the next step up and dial in on fundamentals in key moments. Our boys love playing and competition. I'd like to instill a level of on court discipline. We could get some players to district."
In addition to today's players, Ngeth has seniors Huan Nguyen and Billy Adam. Senior Alan Flores is waiting for eligibility.
"Sophomore Michael Nguyen is stepping to supply a high level of intensity and leads the younger avante guard," Ngeth also notes. "I'm working to serve consistently."
Ngeth's squad is comprised of many seniors and sophomores with few freshmen and juniors.
Court action showcased a Bulldog sweep of the four singles matches by senior athletes.
No. 1 singles player Gary Singh served and pounded his forehand for a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Benny Souricjadeth.
"I've improved my serve and forehand," Sing said. "I'd like to get to district this season."
Davidson Chu closed out Kevin Chow, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 while Russel Camat defeated Dominique Viray, 6-0, 6-2. Son Thai knocked off John Aliminiclover, 6-0, 6-0, for the final on court win.
