Recology Cleanscapes, Burien's new solid waste collector as of June 1, plans to staff a booth Thursdays at the Farmers Mar-ket this month to meet residents and answer questions. Recology Cleanscapes plans to open a customer service center in Burien this spring. Watch for details about the location and hours of operation. A welcome package was mailed to Burien residents and businesses earlier this month. Recycling Collection Event May 17
The annual spring Recycling Collection Event willbe held Saturday, May 17, 9 am - 3 pm, at the Criminal Justice Training Center, 19010 1st Ave. S. Burien residents can bring items for recycling
for no charge including tires, cardboard, reusable clothing and Styrofoam blocks and packaging peanuts. A new pilot project this year is shred-ding and recycling of paper documents. Resi-dents will also be able to buy compost bins, worm bins and rain barrels for $20 each. For more information, see

Seahurst Park Set to Reopen in July

Seahust Park is sche-duled to reopen early July as the Shoreline Restoration Project that began last October en-ters its final stages. Con-struction has been fo-cused this spring on grading and storm drain work along the main park trail, wetland and south to the future picnic and new playground area. The Marine Technology Lab's fish ladder and associated concrete work is nearing completion and will be followed by grading work in front of the lab. Installation of various park furnishings such as playground equipment, park benches and tables will also take place. Watch the City website for information on the parks reopening.

City Council Conducting Full-Day Retreat
The City Council is conducting a full-day retreat this Saturday, May 17, at the Burien Community Center. This will be the first retreat in-volving the new city manager, Kamuron Gurol, who started his job in April. Four of the seven Councilmembers are also new to their positions, having started their Council terms in January. The Council's goal for the retreat is to identify the characteristics of a high-performing Council and agree on specific steps and practices to achieve that standard. Councilmembers also will assess their collective strengths and discuss how they can help the Council reach its goals and priorities.

Sunny Terrace School Torn Down for NERA Project
The City has finished demolishing the old Sunny Terrace Elementary
School, 1010 S. 1246th St., to make way for the Northeast Revelopment Area (NERA) project. The City is partnering with the Port of Seattle to transform the area north of the Sea-Tac Airport third runway to commercial and light-industrial uses com-patible with the airport. A portion of the former school site will be used for a stormwater infiltration facility that will serve the development. Sunny Terrace Elementary School closed in 1976 and later housed the NAVOS mental health program for several years. The City purchased the school from Highline Public Schools in 2013.

Get Ready for the Wild Strawberry Festival
Mark your calendars for this year's Wild Strawberry Fes-tival, June 14 and 15, in downtown Burien. This year's festival promises to be the best one yet with a variety of entertainment, food booths, exhibits and other features. The festival will be based at Burien Town Square Park with the Father's Day Car Show on SW 152nd Street between 6th and 10th Ave, S The carnival and booths will be situated on adjacent streets instead of on the undeveloped parcel just north of the Residences at Burien Town Square condos. The festival will extend from the park onto SW 152nd between 4th and 6th and also on 6th. The carnival will be on SW 151st St. and in an adjacent City parking lot.

Residents Can Get Stormwater Questions Answered
Do you have concerns about stormwater flooding on your property or in your neighborhood? Residents can talk to a City of Burien stormwater technician about flooding and water quality issues every other Thurs-day, 11 am to 2 pm, at the Farmers Market beginning May 15. Tech-nician Angela Gallardo will be at a booth to answer any questions and to hand out literature on natural yard care and pesticide reduction.
