AUBURN - Kentlake overcame an early Mt. Rainier lead by combining strong hitting with some shaky Ram fielding to take a 12-4 NPSL 4A tournament loser-out fastpitch win against young Mt. Rainier on Fri., May 11.
MR ended its season with only two seniors on the squad.
“It was a young team,” said MRHS head coach Shawn Metzger. “I’m proud of them. It was a good year. They played hard and we have something to build on.”
The Rams resumed the previously delayed game in the top of the first inning with one out.
Sophomore Kyla Flynn delivered two-run double to place the Rams into a 2-0.
The bottom of the inning turned into a MR nightmare.
The Falcons had a 12-player at bat to score six runs.
Kentlake padded the margin in the second inning. The Falcons notched four runs largely on the strength of a Maggie Brach three-run homer to lead 10-2 and added single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings.
Mt. Rainier scored its final runs in the fifth inning. Kelsea Grettenberg led off with a walk. One out later, Nicole Pham reached base on an infield throwing error.
Flynn blasted a laser-like line drive just inside the left field line to score two runs and finish the game with four RBI.
Center fielder Bryana Jenkins ranged far and wide to cover her area.
Second baseman Carley Bonds made a nice diving stop of a ground ball in the fifth inning.
