The Chief Sealth Seahawks and the Tyee Totems kicked off their season at six o’clock Friday night (Dec. 2) in front of a good sized crowd at Chief Sealth High School. Right from the start of the game was all Seahawks.
Senior Pepe Hernandez wasted no time getting the crowd and team pumped up with a dunk early in the first quarter. The Seahawks were very aggressive putting on a full court press and then trapping at half court, leading to 10 steals and plenty of fast break points in just the first quarter alone. It took Tyee just over three minutes to score their first point from a free throw, putting the score at 16-1. The Totems weren’t handling the ball well and were taking some off balanced and forced shots causing several air balls.

By time the quarter ended Chief Sealth led 38-3 with 10 steals, as Tyee had 13 turnovers.
The game slowed down a lot in the second quarter. The Seahawks starters didn’t play the rest of the game after about two minutes into the quarter. Neither team scored in the first four and a half minutes until Sealth forward Aaron Knox got an easy layup.
With the score 46-6, the second half proved to be uneventful. Only 20 points were scored combined the rest of the game. With around five minutes left in the game, there was a scoreboard malfunction as the buzzer would not shut off. After a 10 minute delay and multiple attempts, the score keepers had to switch to a flip chart to show the score, and use a cell phone to keep track of the time. The game ended with a 59-13 victory for Chief Sealth, which could have been a lot worse for Tyee had the Chief Sealth starters remained in the game. Scoring was led by Bronte’ Corbray and Pepe Hernandez, who had 10 points each, as Hernandez also had several impressive dunks.
“I’m pleased with our energy. You want to see that from the get go, and win the first game and not have many mistakes”, said head coach Colin Slingsby. “We still have a long ways to go. It was definitely a good start but there are still things we need to work on”.
