The downside of small safes
On Feb. 10 around 1:30 p.m. a Bonair Dr. S.W. home was broken into by unknown suspects. The alarm tripped upon their entry and the homeowner came how to find the thieves stole three wristwatches and his small locked safe which contained no cash, but stocks, bonds, birth certificates, a marriage certificate and his family’s social security cards. The victim estimated the safe weighed around 100 pounds. Southwest Precinct officers have mentioned the drawback of small fire-proof safes: while they are great for protection in a fire, they are a magnet for burglars and small enough to pick up and run off with.

Small knife assault at 16th and Thistle
On Feb. 11 at 6 a.m. police responded to the area listed above and arrested a female for attacking a man. The arrested female told police she was hanging out with the man when he accused her of stealing his money. She said she denied the theft and the man then attempted to rape her. According to the stabbing victim, he had $500 in his car and the woman stole it. He said he grabbed her jacket because he thought she was going to run away and she began stabbing him with a small knife. The victim had a small cut on his right eye and was bleeding from the mouth. Police arrested the woman and found a small container that contained what the officer believed to be black tar heroin and a syringe hidden under a wristband.

Rent money robbery
On Feb. 11 between six and seven p.m. a woman living in an apartment complex on the 9200 block of 2nd Ave S.W. said she went to an ATM to take out rent money, got back in her vehicle and drove home. When she got out of the car she said an unknown suspect was standing behind her. He grabbed her by the throat and pushed her back into the car before demanding her money. The victim said she didn’t have any and the suspect took her purse. The victim said she fell out of the vehicle after he fled, hit her head and may have gotten knocked unconscious. She awoke on the ground and called for help: a passerby saw her and called 911. When police arrived the woman was complaining of head and back pain but was initially uncooperative in telling them what happened. The manager of the apartments told police the victim “was behind on rent and was on ten day notice to vacate.”

Not the ideal way to redecorate
On S. Cloverdale in South Park officers responded to an afternoon burglary in progress call earlier this month. The suspects were described by the 911 caller who saw them rooting in a neighbor’s home thusly: A white female with dirty blonde hair and a grey jacket and another white female with black hair and a white coat. They were walking a black dog. When officers arrived they found a slightly different pair walking down the street: The one with the dirty blonde hair walking a black dog checked out, but her companion was a male wearing a black leather jacket, black hat and black pants with a plastic bag over his right shoulder and a backpack over the other. The two were stopped for suspicion of burglary and the male’s record turned up numerous outstanding warrants across Washington. As they frisked the suspects, police found a small plastic bag of methamphetamine on the female. She said she found it in the bushes along with the glass pipe used to smoke it. Syringes and a glass jar containing meth were found on the male. Inside the backpack police found several decorative plastic flowers and a stained glass lamp. The victim arrived home and verified the flowers and lamp belonged to him. His property was returned and the suspects were taken to jail.
