Bing Dahl, a longtime coach at Washington state high schools who played basketball at University of Washington and Washington State College, will be honored as the Old Timers Man of the Year Wednesday, May 7, at the 62nd annual Basketball Old-Timers Banquet at the Ballard Elks Lodge in Seattle.

Dahl's high school coaching career included coaching basketball, football and baseball for three years each at Colville and Kent Meridian high schools and for 30 years as a coach and counselor at Evergreen High School in White Center.

Previous winners of the prestgious award were Walt Milroy, Rod Belcher, Roman Miller and Irv Leifer.

Eldridge Recasner, a former University of Washington basketball player who played in the NBA from 1994 through 2002, will be the banquet speaker. Recasner was a three-time all-Pac-10 Conference guard who played for the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets ad Los Angeles during his NBA career.

Dahl, 91, played basketball at Washington and Washington State before launching his long and distinguished distinguished high school coaching career at Colville High School. Born in Berthold, N.D., population 450, he was a star basketball and football player at North Central High School in Spokane, where he was described as "a good long shot and clever dribbler … a good floor man … very cool under fire."

World War II cut short his college days in Seattle and he spent 37 months in the U.S. Army in England and at Camp Lee, Va., where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant. After the war, Dahl wanted to be closer to home in Spokane so he transferred to Washington State, where he played basketball and baseball in his last two college years.

Dahl and his wife, Delores, have been married for 66 years and have four children, two of whom will attend the banquet.

The old-timers have been having their banquets since 1952 and currently have more than 200 members.

The public is invited to this year's banquet, which starts at 5:30 p.m. The price of a ticket is $35.
