With new car care technology and the ever ending products and choices available for retail, it's really tough to decide on which kind of protection is the right fit for your vehicle. In the past everyone was out to get the “best” wax job applied to their vehicle. Here's what we now know about traditional waxes and polymer-based sealants in comparison to the new state of the art nano-technology sealants, waxes and coatings.
There's something to the type of warmth traditional waxes add to paint. That being said , I've always been dedicated to finding the longest lasting protection and appearance combined. Today in terms of high-quality protection AND durability, a traditional wax is finishing in last place.
Most waxes are made with carnauba which comes from palm trees which acts as a coating to the leaves that helps protect them from drying out in the hot sun. This same carumba is used in all sorts of things like making candy glossy , etc. The trees produce as much as needed. Well that doesn't happen when it's on your paint. These waxes melt off in warm temperatures and we are only seeing 6-8 weeks of durability on a standard wax in normal weather. More expensive waxes that have higher concentrations of carnauba can last longer but not much.
Stepping up to traditional “sealants” , these CAN last up to a year with synthetic features. Formulated with polymers and higher levels of carnauba, the bond to the clear-coat is much stronger. In my experience I've only seen 8 -9 months out of a polymer-based sealant .
Do you want high durability with minimal maintenance? Do you like a warm glow, or do you like more of a “glassy” look?
The latest in car care technology is bringing us sealants and coatings specifically formulated and designed to give us the longest-lasting protection, gloss, glow, water -repelling action, and oxidation prevention. Nano-technology.
Silica-based sealants and coatings which start at 6 months and up to 7 years. Yes, I said 7 years. With all of the regulations on modern-day car paint, the quality is much lower than it used to be on many vehicles and these high-end coatings are getting popular. I can polish a new car with defects in the paint and already know this car is at a dangerous level to correct again in the future without burning through the clear-coat
