On October 9th, The Senior Center of West Seattle held its yearly volunteer appreciation party to show our enormous love and gratitude to the over 200 volunteers who donate their time, skill, and care that make it possible to do all that we do.
This year’s celebration was extra special in that we honored long term volunteer Jean Carroll with the first annual Jean Carroll Extraordinary Volunteer Service Award. A West Seattle Resident for 86 year’s Jean’s incredible dedication and commitment inspired us to create this award to recognize her 20+ years of volunteer service.
Not only are we honoring her this year, but this award will be given to a different volunteer each year who demonstrates these characteristics. Thank you, Jean, for the tens of thousands of hours of your time and expertise you have so generously given to the Center!

Article from the Senior Center Newsletter, in the March/April, 2014:
April, 2014 Volunteer Extraordinaire, Jean Carroll!
We would like to take this opportunity to appreciate and acknowledge our dedicated volunteer, Jean Carroll. With over 130,000 hours of volunteer service in the last 17 years, she has been an integral part of the Center. Five days a week, rain or shine, she shows up with her smile and great attitude, keeping track of all of our 1000+ memberships. Using her trusty 3x5 index cards, she makes sure all our membership dues are current. A truly dedicated volunteer, she often brings her work home, which she likes because it keeps her busy and productive.
As a true ambassador for the Senior Center, You’ll find Jean regularly giving tours to prospective new members. Her genuine passion of meeting new people shows as she welcomes and introduces them to the Center’s many activities and classes. Lunch time you will find her serving delicious nutritious meals in our “Junction Diner”. When asked why she volunteers, she says she enjoys being around the people here at the Senior Center, and that she “just plain likes it!”
A West Seattle resident for 82 years, Jean was wife to John Carroll for 50 years, and has been a member of The Center for 27 years. She is much loved and cherished by the staff and members alike, and we all send out a huge THANK YOU for all she does each and every day!
Next time you are in The Center, make sure to seek Jean out and give her an “Atta Girl”!
