information from Seattle Department of Transportation
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has reopened to traffic on Highland Park Way SW from SW Holden St to W Marginal Way SW but reduced to one lane in each direction. Additional lanes of the road and sidewalk may be reopened once geological experts verify that the area is safe to travel through. Highland Park Way SW is an arterial on the West Seattle Bridge detour route connecting Highland Park, Delridge, White Center, and other West Seattle neighbors with the First Avenue South Bridge. SDOT recommends that travelers crossing the Duwamish shift trips to off-peak times and use the other detour routes while the street is partially reopened. If you need to travel in the area, be prepared for the possiblity of a longer commute.
Highland Park Way SW was closed due to a landslide and fallen trees. SDOT crews installed ecology blocks in order to reopen lanes. SDOT and Seattle Parks plan to work around the clock to respond to the hazard, clear debris from the streets, and safely repair wires so that the road can be reopened to travelers.
If you need to drive, please obey all traffic signs and follow detour routes, police directions, or find alternate routes. Notifications and travel advisories will be shared as streets reopen or conditions change.
Here are some tips to follow to ensure the safety of you and others:
-
Be aware of your surroundings when walking, cycling, rolling, or driving. Please travel slow and keep alert!
-
With intense rain over the past few days, keep your neighborhood safe and accessible for all. If a drain is blocked, clearing a clogged gutter will reduce rainwater buildup that otherwise causes flooding.
The SDOT’s Travelers Map shows the latest street and bridge closures and shares camera feeds to monitor condition. The map is available at https://web6.seattle.gov/travelers. You can also find up to date traffic information on the SDOT Traffic twitter handle: SDOT Traffic (@SDOTtraffic) / Twitter.
King County Metro will keep riders informed of transit impacts by sending email and texts to route subscribers, and posting updates on Twitter.
