Up We Go: Development updates for West Seattle
Thu, 03/21/2013
Nowadays, there are guaranteed to be any number of new developments either in the planning stage, being built, or on the cusp of opening up as West Seattle transforms to a higher density form of living.
As of March 21, here are just a few of the latest development happenings:
5020 California Ave. S.W. (6 story) – Any day now
F & M Development out of Burien is expected to start construction sometime this month on a six-story, 101- unit apartment building with 4,000 sq. feet of retail at the base level and parking for 95 vehicles. Nine residential units within three structures will be demolished to make room.

Deemed the largest single project in West Seattle’s history, this structure in the Fauntleroy Triangle will comprise three-quarters of a city block with a Whole Foods grocery story, 370 apartments, 570 underground parking spots and a chain pharmacy within six stories. After passing the Early Design Review process, the project moves into the Design Review on March 28, 6:30 p.m. at the West Seattle Senior Center. All design review meetings are open to the public.

Youngstown Flats at 4040 26th Ave. S.W. (6-story) – Almost move-in ready
After a false start in 2008 as Portvue, different developers took over the project in North Delridge and named it Youngstown Flats. They are giving tours and pre-leasing now with plan to let renters move in in April. The building is six stories tall with almost 200 units.

“aPodments” at 4535 44th Ave. S.W. (4-story) – Early notice
West Seattleite John Comick has applied to turn a lot at 4535 44th Ave. S.W. into a 4-story building with 31 units. Known as micro-apartments or aPodments, the projects generally consist of small and relatively cheap rooms with shared common spaces for tenants. While applauded for providing affordable living options, some across the city have complained micro-apartments add to already-tight parking concerns with many tenants (and potentially many vehicles) crammed into a tight space.
