Featuring a 'greatest hits' approach to the menu, the New Luck Toy has opened on California Ave in the former Chopstix location near Juneau Street SW.
The name New Luck Toy for many long time West Seattle people conjures up chinese take-out, amazing drinks, a neighborhood hang out and karaoke. But the original, a fixture in the West Seattle Junction has been closed for more than a decade. Now thanks to Mark Fuller, the chef at Ma’ono Fried Chicken and Whisky and Patrick Gabre-Kidan it's back and features "the greatest hits" of what made the original such a favorite.
Located at 5905 California Ave SW in the former Chopstix location the completely remodeled space features booths, a pagoda style roof in the bar and chinese lanterns throughout. But Fuller said he wanted it to be "less formal" hence the presence of both a pinball and skee ball machine.
With seating for 60 people the menu features items like Old Bay Salt & Pepper Shrimp, Fragrant Spare Ribs, Spicy Shrimp & Pork Fat Dumplings, Shittake Pork Egg Rolls, Mitake Hot & Sour Soup, Barbecued Pork, Honey Pecan Prawns, Toothpick Lamb, General Tso's Chicken, Numbing Boiled Beef in Fiery Sauce, Mongolian Beef & Bitter Broccoli, Barbecued Half a Lucky Ducky, Spicy Ma Po Tofu, Chow Fun Mian, Xaio Mian, Shrimp Won Ton Mian, Jerked Fried Rice, Dry Fried Long Beans, Double Garlic Butter Broccoli, Bok Choy, and Jasmine Rice.
The New Luck Toy is 21 and over only in house and four "Slushie" drinks are available including Strawberry, Prickly Pear Margarita, a Lucky Colada, Singapore Sling and a Mango Scorpion. Four beers are on tap and 12 brands are available in the bottle.
You will be able to order online at www.newlucktoy.bar (not quite yet) but not with a delivery service. That will likely happen in a couple of months they said. They don't expect take out to be the dominant portion of the business since they see the New Luck Toy as a neighborhood bar just like the original.
Unique in the area is the Karaoke room up front which is literally soundproofed to allow a limited number in to sing their hearts out while not disturbing anyone in the restaurant.
The New Luck Toy is open every day from 4pm to 2am.
